Description *EDIT*
*So this drawing has finally made me give up on my old camera. I've been using the same Sony camera for years now. It's been a long time. Thing is, I end up having to take anywhere from 10-40 photos just to get one that is perfect, in terms of lighting, sharpness and all that jazz. And "perfect" for this camera is just passable. It's a pretty poor camera as far as standards go these days. I've been putting in extra effort, to get as many small details into this drawing as I can, but this camera just can't pick them up correctly. For example, tiny hairs around the eyebrow. It just kinda darkens the whole thing and they all get blurred together and pixelated. It drives me nuts to take a photo and not have it actually represent the work. It may not be too noticeable in this picture, but trust me if you zoom in it's definitely obvious.

So I've purchased a new camera, it's coming in a few days. I'm also going to set up a proper spot to photograph them, that way when the drawing is finished I can upload the best possible photo ._. It's been a long time coming, I'm excited *

Yo.

Doing a portrait of Ellie from the Last of Us 2 trailer. Pretty freaking hyped they're doing a sequel; hope to god they don't mess it up.

Anyways, I'm really going to take my time with this one. Been having a good amount of fun drawing it so far, so I hope I won't burn out and lose steam like I always do ._. I'm using a slightly bigger paper this time than I normally do, 11x14. I usually use 9x12. I'm going to try to make this transition for the rest of my drawings going forward too, it'll let me get more detail in there =].

1- Really the only thing "done" so far is the ear. Still need to add some depth to the top-most section of hair, and the eye is only just started.

2- Trying to get most of the left side done before I move onto the face. Really gotta focus on working left to right with this one, don't wanna have to deal with the smudging and dark graphite everywhere ._.

3- Such a small section of drawing, but soooo much work .-. One of my bigger issues when drawing is white highlights that are very small dots. I've still not really found a way to do it easily. Easiest way is to erase the dot, but then it's never as white as it should be. Hardest way is to completely draw around every white dot from the beginning, and well, that's hard when dealing with tons of white dots or pores. I like to start with a base skin layer before I do anything, but you can't do that if you want to draw around the white from the get go. It would be an extremely long process. I guess I could always just go to an even bigger paper, that way none of the dots would actually be that small xD.

4- Slowly getting there. This is going to be the last WIP before I upload the full picture. Such little amount of the drawing seems to get done between pictures, but it feels like so much work ._.

I'll update this picture as I progress.

Great to see a master at work. Do you have any tips on how to do dark hair or just hair in general? I do okay but I always struggle with hair.

I made a small tutorial awhile back, I briefly went over a few steps I take with hair:

Realism Portrait Tips/Tutorial *BIG FILE*

It's about a year old now, but I still do mostly the same things. As far as dark hair goes, it's still a slow process regardless of what you do. With dark hair, I tend to do it in several layers. I usually always start with a base layer across wherever I'm working, and then slowly try to add gradient through the base layer from dark to light. After a general gradient is down, I start adding in light pencil strokes for hair, and eraser strokes for highlights. It usually ends up being a lot of back and forth before I'm happy with it. It's hard to explain in text lol, I'll have to get into doing videos at some point, it's much easier to show in motion.

Btw, I still think I have a ways to go before I'm a "master" but thank you for the compliment ^_^

Thanks for the tutorial. I just tried my hand in portrait drawing today, and wasn't sure how to go about the hair. It's also cool to see I was on the right track using Q-tips.Β

The shading looks smoothly, wish my shading like that someday ;~;... Cannot wait to see the finish product of it!

Do you still uses Q-Tips and Blending Stomps?

And yes, I still use Q-tips and stomps.

I like Keanu, but I haven't seen the movies, despite hearing how good they are. Maybe some day!

How do you get those super dark tones , with charcoal ?

TricepTerry In reply to Nobert-Stanel [2017-08-09 18:51:59 +0000 UTC]

I've never worked with charcoal actually, been afraid to considering what I've heard in terms of mixing it with graphite. I use 4B mechanical pencil for my darkest tones. The mechanical lead is the biggest help for this, because it's easy to keep it sharp at all times. When the lead is sharp it's far easier to get the darkest tone out of it, so every few seconds of using it, I break the tip of the lead to get a sharp edge again. The biggest issue with this is that I need to use a lot of pressure to get a dark tone, which creates heavy indents and sheen. It affects what it looks like in person quite a bit, but doesn't show up in photos like this. Using softer darker grades of graphite would make it easier to avoid indenting the paper too heavily, but the sheen would still be present, so either way these issues aren't really avoidable.

Hope that helps some.

That did indeed, the darkest mechanical i had is 2b, and that's almost equal to 7b normal pencil or so, if pushed hard, and i made recently that mistake of mixing coal with graphite. That's why i was wondering. Yup the shinning is a side effect, but so be it, there are some ,, jedi ways " to avoid that shinning, with special techniques of how an artist controls his hand in the process , but maybe that's for future.

Thanks !
