Description
Tommy Richardsen // Trichardsen // Facebook // 500px Β // Google+ // InstagramThis is why I go up the mountain every day, and it makes things more fun when able to capture such cool shapes within the aurora.
Oh an may i add, it has been some heavy days lately, have to dress for standing still, which means when moving up a mountain with all the camera gear it is quite hard.
But it is all worth it for a shot like this, I am very proud of this cause I feel I was finaly able to capture the aurora where it speaks for itself with almost no foreground help.
For the post processing: contrast +30, clarity +32, lower by 300 temp to bring forth the stars, increased whites and blacks by a smidge, reduced the purple saturation a tad, lens correction.
Used hyperfocal distance to get everything in focus, so wasnt much need for sharpening really, but added some to it.

Thank you for the kind words.
It is not hard to understand any envy in that regards, but I do hope you get to see it one day.

What a weird statement, first of all except for the very weakest of auroras the place where I live lies in the middle of the auroraΒ oval.
The strenght of the aurora always varies around this oval, it can be very strong one place, diminish, be strong another place within the oval and again be strong in the first place.
The stronger a flare from the sun is the larger this oval will be and it is not a contest of where the aurora is strongest.
Canada and Northern Norway are two of the worlds best places to see the aurora, while one moment it indeed will be stronger in Canada, 10 minutes later Northern Norway will have the strongest aurora.
There is no evidence whatsoever that one particular place within the aurora oval constantly shows stronger and brighter auroras.

My bad then. It's just they're always bright when I watch them. I guess I'm just lucky.

That I can believe, but still that does not mean the aurora you see is less or more bright than anywhere else within the aurora oval averaging it out over time, it will be brighter than anywhere else at times, but so is true for anywhere else along the oval.
The more important thing is that you are enjoying seeing the light, you feel lucky when you do and that is what you should treasure.

The Aurora is a fantastic subject for photos, and this is an exemplary image that really stood out to me. The way you've angled the trees to lead into the light is fantastic, whilst the fact you've also managed to capture the starry sky so wonderfully behind the lights is also amazing.
If I was to be hugely critical, then I'd probably point out that it is a slight shame the curved arc of light is ever so slightly cut off at the top of the image. But that's a really minor and nit-picky observation that is underwhelming in respect of the stunning image you've got here - it stood out to me from a small thumbnail whilst I was busy favouriting another of your images.

We live in a world where the most exciting thing we can see, usually, are neon club lights and skyscrapers. Because of the advancements of civilization, we often forget the raw beauty and power of nature.
People who have never heard of the aurora would probably gaze upon it and wonder, "How much equipment did they need for that?"
Truly stunning photo. I love the angle, and the lighting (of course) against the trees was excellent. Most importantly, I love how "back to earth" this made me feel, because lately I've been forgetting how pretty nature can be.
Continue doing what you're doing, it's stunning.

Okay, there are so many things to say about this beautiful picture.
First off, The lights. They stand out so much in this picture! They make like a gradient kinda like picture. It looks almost like there's going to be some portal in the middle of the sky!
Second, The stars. It makes it look sparkly and it doesn't cover up the aurora. It kinda makes it pop out a little.
Last, the trees. The position of the trees look amazing! It doesn't really cover a lot of this picture but the trees look like the're trying to reach up for the aurora because of how it's so beautiful.
Your photography is amazing! I hope you keep taking more pictures for all of us on Deviantart!

Beautiful. That's the only word that fits. The colouring and shading are absolutely spectacular, and the details are so lifelike. Amazing job.

Thank you very much, I am glad you like it.
No need for that, I knew the rewards of going up that mountain to make the capture and I got paid in full.
