Description "Oooh, I'm getting too old to scamper across logs like this..."

"Hey, Dad, check this out. Someone put up a sign calling that tree a toll bridge."

"Huh. Hope they're not expecting much for it."

"It....actually doesn't say what the toll is. Nor who to pay it to..."

Actually, the toll is to be paid to the bridge herself. And as soon as the elder hunter steps off of her, the Wood Nymph they just crossed will tranform back from tree into woman, and kindly request that one of the hunters reward her for her services. I'm sure they'll figure out a way...

...Looking back at this drawing, I see two things wrong with the concept. First, the Wood Nymph--supposedly a tree-sized tree spirit--is so much bigger than any other pictured trees. Second, the young hunter is reading.

I suppose I can explain the first by saying that since the Wood Nymph spends most her time with her feet (roots) in the bottom of a gulley, she has a chance to grow extra big. And that she trims away any competing trees that might block her water or her sun, and that may serve as a 'free' bridge across the gulley should they fall. As to the second, I dunno/ I don't really want these two to be educated nobles...But maybe there's some religious order that will teach basic literacy to the country-folk...

I'm guessing she's based on a live oak

Hmm maybe she's simply the oldest and largest tree there

What a devious trap! Maybe they can flee quickly... Nymphs arent fast runners are they?

Well, I suppose that depends on thier choice of footwear--weather they value looks or practicality.... And what they are forced to run through. The bigger one is, the more thick trees and underbrush may slow them down...

Well how long does it take for them to unroot?

Um....The Nymph herself? She can go from tree to woman almost instantly. But other foliage, well, there's nothing she can do about other trees/bushes except plow through them...

Ah. Well they prolly wont be expecting her and wont be able to break into a sprint fast enough.

That is relative. They probably need to make over 30 steps to match a single of hers. Which means that she can afford to move her body over 30 times slower than a human and still match their speed.

Also in the nature world, humans are not known to be fast runners themselves. Humans is the type of creature which is better off outwitting or fighting off predators than outrunning them.

"So how do we tell if she is made of wood?"
"Build a bridge out of er"
"Ah, but can you not make bridges out of stone?"
"Oh yeah."

Maybe. But it is one of the nicer 'dirty tricks' a girl like her could play.

There is that. Makes one wonder what would happen if some tried to make a bridge out of an Amazon.
