Description
Alarea stood up to give her legs and back a decent stretch, sighed heavily and wiped off a bit of sweat from her scaly forehead. The weather was wonderfully warm and sunny today, however perhaps a bit too warm for the current task at hand. She had promised her lovely elderly neighbor to help out on the sweet-smelling strawberry fields as most of them were ripe, even though at the moment she’d rather be by the crystal clear and pleasantly cool river, perhaps just enjoying the caressing touch of the water’s flow or collecting colorful smooth pebbles for her current art project. The open field had no shade, except for the old oak tree in the corner, which’s branches and softly rustling leaves protected the baskets with already picked fresh berries from the sharp rays of the Sun. She noticed how the irresistible sweet scent had lured in a couple of bees, who were curiously buzzing around the baskets and occasionally landing on the red berries to take a refreshing sip from the juice seeping from the overripe ones. The only additional sound to the tiny companions was the mild wind, softly playing with the leaves in the bushes, trees, flowers and grassfields as it passed by on its journey to the unknown distances.
After feeling her body getting its short rest, she adjusted her papyrus-woven wide hat, rolled up the bottom edge of her pearly-white toga and crouched over the rows of plants again to continue harvesting the delicious berries. She had to be quite careful with both the small fragile plants and the delicate berries, as pulling too hard had quite the potential to break the whole stem, stealing the opportunity of reaching adulthood from remaining flowers and still growing green berries attached to it. In case she didn’t control her grip carefully enough, she risked squishing the fresh produce right between her fingers. Of course this had already happened a couple of times when she started the job in the morning, fortunately she could toss the mushed berries right into her mouth (which she already did with the overripe ones anyway) but she felt bad for accidentally breaking off the flowers, so she remained especially vigilant with those. Occasionally she also used her magic to aid her with the tricky task, letting the invisible force extend from her paw to gently grab the target and float it into the short-edged box next to her. Even though the magic made it a lot easier, she had decided to also improve the dexterity of her stubby fingers a bit. This seemed to pay off as compared to earlier, she was perfectly capable of picking the berries without harming them while successfully sorting out the ones that wouldn’t last long among the others in the basket.
She let out a soft groan as she stood up again after picking clean the last plant in the row. Her legs had gotten quite stiff from being in locked position for so long, but as a reward she got to witness a job well done - the strawberry plants leaves were gently fluttering in the wind, as if waving to Alarea and thanking her for taking care of their produce while the filled boxes in the shade of the oak tree were filling the surrounding air with their luscious scent. She stepped in the shade to catch her breath and cool down a little, where she also noticed the amphora leaning against the tree with clean water in it. She had brought with herself earlier and had fully forgotten about it. With a soft gasp, she reached for it and nearly emptied it up in order to quench the thirst she didn’t know she had. Feeling much better now, she wiped the last drops of water off her maw and her eyes stopped at the strawberries next to her. With a smug smile, she quickly heaped a small pile of them in her stained paw and rewarded herself with a mouthful of delicious berries.
