Description    Raudkembinger is the creature that is part of the ferocious whales called Illhvelli. It is said to be the most barbaric and bloodthirsty of all the whales in Iceland's ocean. Enjoying destroying ships and killing people like other Ilvelli, the flesh of the Loudchembinger is never edible. Raudkembinger means "red crest," which this whale has on its back. Most of the mythology mentions that this creature has a red crest, the back is coffee brown, and the belly is pink. The sizes of this creature vary. It says that it can grow 10-20, or 40m long.

I re-imagined this dangerous creature in a kind of realistic way. I used Dunkleosteus, Alligator snapping turtle, Basilosaurus, and Livyatan as a reference to design this whale.

I used Livyatan as a reference because this closely related species of sperm whale matches with Raudkembinger in some perspective. The myth says that Raudkembinger destroys 18 ships on the ocean once a day. It says that this whale uses teeth and jumps to destroy ships. None of the whales these days cannot use their teeth to destroy ships. Sperm whales' teeth are too small to hurt a big wooden ship. Also, orcas are too small to destroy a ship. However, Livyatan Melville was one of the powerful top predators in the Miocene ocean and had big size and giant teeth. So to me, this creature was a decent choice to inspire the design of my take on Raudkembinger. Also, when it destroys all 18 ships, I do not think this creature only relies on teeth and body slams. Livyatan uses its head to kill smaller prey with one shot. So like Livyatan, I think this whale also used its head slam skills to destroy ships.

I also used Dunkleosteus as a reference, because to destroy the ship with its head, I thought this creature would have a hardened structure on its head compared to other sperm whales. When the hardened head came into my head, I immediately remembered Dunkleosteus' hardened head. So, I designed its head that has biotic armor, just like Dunkleosteus and other Placoderms. The difference is that while this creature's head armor is made of bone, the head plate of Raudkembinger is made of hardened skin. In reality, we can see this in other mammals, such as elephants, armadillos, or pangolins. I am not sure whales can have those rough skins, though. The skin isn’t as hard as bones, but it is effective against brain damage.

I designed this whale’s body that looks similar to Basilosaurus, the ancient animal with a slim body. The myth described that Raudkembinger had a thin body type, which reminded me of the body shape of Basilosaurus. And lastly, I used an Alligator snapping turtle as a reference, because of the hardened head that I made and full of sharp crests which are in the back of the Raudkembinger originally. This shape reminded me of an Alligator snapping turtle, so I gave it a sharp, hardened beak-like structure on its mouth, and the turtle plate look-like a whale's back.

This whale is an aggressive animal. If they see something dangerous coming, they immediately try to destroy them. It is my speculation, but I guess it is because of their sensitive reaction to their surroundings. And this is related to its red color. I re-imagined that their ancestors weren't that big, and usually hide somewhere in coral reefs, especially with more red color. To survive, they need to fight each other to have more space and act sensitive towards any other dangerous things. So because of this environmental problem, they naturally evolved to red-colored aggressive sea monsters. The size of this whale varies. The female Raudkembinger grows around over 20m, while the biggest elder male Raudkembinger can grow up to 40m. While females live as a small group, males live by themselves. They usually hunt sharks, fish, and other whales in the Epipelagic Zone. However, they also hunt giant cephalopods by diving deep into the ocean about over 2000m deep. Males sometimes fight each other for domination of territory. They use their head bump to fight each other and show who got more damage. They can move over 35 km/hr, which makes their head bump even more dangerous to other animals.

(If you find something weird in speculative section, I am sorry. I am just a silly nerd, not professional speculative biologist.)
