Well, thank you.  I always feel like I don't have a style, but I guess it's like an accent, you can never hear your own, right?

definitely c: and the portrait is super unique. I see a lot of people on here go to create something EXACTLY like the pic they are referencing and it just doesn't work. Also, I adore pastels, though I struggle with them. I respect those who use them effectively like you

Well, my INTENTION is to make a photorealistic representation, but I guess I get in the way of my own art.

But hey, if that makes it more original, all the better, I guess.

What is it about pastels that you find difficult?  I use the chalk ones, and I find them very forgiving.  If I screw up, I can literally wipe that area clean and start all over again.  I'm am also a blendy, blendy, blender, and pastels really lend themselves to that.

Well, I struggle with controlling the chalk ones- especially with detail. I've worked with Prismacolors so long that it's hard to deal with not having a point, plus I get frustrated with the mess on my paper. With oil pastels, as much as I adore the smooth color, I just have a really hard time detailing with them. I dunno, I just need practice.

And I feel your piece is better with it's own style c: Hey, even if it doesn't match your intention, it still turned out wonderful.

Did you know that there are pastel PENCILS?  Neither did I up until a year ago.  Mind blowing!

I block everything in with the sticks, then use the pencils for the details.

I also keep a small towel and a wet sponge nearby, to wipe my fingers on, so I don't much up the whole page.

no way. Those exist??? Imma have to invest in some.

And yeah the sponge idea is probably smart. I am just generally a messy artist, so even with that it gets hard, haha.

But your techniques make a lot of sense!

I tend to be messy too, but I'm working on it.  I actually wet my finger and wiped around this picture to get rid of all of the fingerprints.

And yes, buy some pastel pencils.  Mine are Faber Castel pitt pastels.  Not fancy, but I quite like them.  I actually like most of what Faber Castel makes.  pens, pencils, pastels etc.

^^ Ha! Just got into the show not too long ago. Perfect timing for me to appreciate the closeness in likeness of this piece. ^^ Love the hair highlights, good choice.
