Description
Sorry that this isn't a better scan and you can't see the labels. My HP desk-jet is a waste of space and electronic resources.Anyway...
I play dungeons and dragons from time to time. Problem is I can't usually make contact with my dungeon master and I don't get to do it very often. So, the other day I was talking to a friend about it and he was flabbergasted that a girl would know so much about D&D. He suggested that I become a dungeon master and how cool it would be to have a female DM. I'm not sure I'm actually going to do it because I have a life and becoming a DM is a huge investment of time, but it got me thinking, what if you had a bunch of campaigns with lots of journeying and you wanted to play out these campaigns without the use of a computer, and still without skipping over the journey part? You would need a huge map and that would take up tons of space.
But not necessarily!
What if you had this long piece of paper where you drew out your map and there was a scroll at each end. Above it is a clear plastic game board to indicate feet and yards and so forth. When the players move forward a large extent, then all you have to do is roll the scrolls in the right direction and there they are, further along the path. Of course you could only do this in a backward and forward direction but this would be a huge space saver! Not to mention the players wouldn't be able to see the landscape that they haven't actually come across yet.
Not only that but all this could be put atop a box with a drawer where figurines and various other D&D materials could be stored for the DM's convenience. Not only could you hide the landscape that lies ahead but also the little toys of the enemies you intend to throw at them!
I feel like this is a really cool idea and I would love to get some feed back from other Dungeons and Dragon's players.

I actually made this after seeing it and it wasn't all that much andΒ the game board itself is 18x24 squares (inches) [90x120 feet in game]
I made all the walls and "floor" from two 20x30 Foam core boards i got at Micheal's for $2.99 each, the clear part from a 18x24 plastic board from Home Depot for $9.99; for the map itself i got a 16inch wide and 100ft long roll of "finger-paint roll" at Micheals for $3.99. the entire thing was easily assembled with a boxcutter, fine sharpie marker and hot glue and the grand total of the project was a little under $20! I later added in the draw with another foam core board and a draw slider from Home Depot for another $6 total

This is actually a very good idea indeed, and I think I may build this device myself (I am a Dungeon Master with a quite long experience). I think it would take only very little money and a little amount of time, if you actually know how to build it.
You gave me a greatest idea... What about an entire TABLE, with a huge map rolling into two scrolls at each end of the table, which is of course transparent?
Anyway, about your box, if Australia wasn't so far from Italy, where I live, I would try and build this one for you, as an experiment to see if it works as expected.
My compliments for the idea; sorry about my terrible english.

A whole table would be so cool! You would have to draw/print on huge pieces of paper and make sure to build the table in such a way that you could remove that paper but yeah, theoretically that would work. If you ever build that, can you post pictures of it?

Wow. Now THAT is awesome! But it would probably cost a metric shit-ton to make :L. Still though, it'd look really classy and boss on a table instead of some ordinary graph paper.

Right?! Right?! Shit if I just had money to throw around I would get this made. No joke.

This is a really neat idea and if I find the time I'll feature it on my blog, rpgbooster.com. Have you ever seen anything like it anywhere else?
I would recommend it for large scale travelling though, instead of smaller journeys. Or perhaps a very specific dungeon that only goes in one direction. Hmm.

I've never seen anything like this before, no. As to why no one else ever seems to have thought of it, I can't say.
Your right about the traveling or dungeons that go one direction. It wouldn't be without its downside. Your welcome to share it on your blog. My only stipulation is that it not be used for profit but anything other than that and you're totally free to share this idea.
