This idea hit me when he interacted with some dog puppets leading me to find Digi-Mutts who would keep him company in his miserable life along with being helpful with his job. Each one with various references, such as Rookie being capable of restoring & optimizing data like Gordon's Maintenance Job, the champ is a puppet type symbolizing his predicament, the Ult's are more combat oriented whist the Mega makes good judgement representing his friendship with some of the game's bosses.
