Description
OK so this is a very broad tutorial I made. It should answer a lot of lighting and blending related questions. I am just trying to introduce you here to new techniques maybe, but if you understand the techniques you can tweak them to suit your own needs. THe aim of this is to give beginner artist who already know all the tools well, that push they need to go to the intermediate level. This tutorial is perfect for you wether you use a mouse or a tablet.
The Tutorial can be view here Youtube Video Part 1 // Youtube Video Part 2 // Youtube Video Part 3 // Youtube Video Part 4
Other tutorials that might be good to check out also, that goes hand in hand with this tutorial;
Pen Tool // Background Blending // Depth Of Field part 1 // Depth of Field part 2 // The Rule Of Thirds by conzpiracy
Credits:
BG1 // BG2 // Model // Fox // Hair Brush
I know there are some things I did do wrong, for those who know what to look for, but I think for tutorial purposes it should work just fine. Hope you enjoy it!!

So it seems like this was an epic fail, I seem to have lost the originals when my pc crashed a while ago. So i'll be taking down these. But don't fear, a brand new tutorial will be out this week!

great tuturial! I think this will help lots of people!
On the tutorial itself, I found it a little long sometimes, but I think that is just me (always impatient )
On the content, I have some things I do differently (of course, everyone does stuff differently, doesn't mean your way is wrong or something) and that I want to throw in as suggestions for you:
1) I don't care much for the part about blurring the model's outlines because you blur not only the outline but the model's pixels as well - what I do instead is rasterize the vector mask and then blur the outlines of the resulting layer mask (you can also use the mask adjustments for that).
2) What you do on the model is mainly use the existing lighting to go along with, but the model is lit from the side and now there's light from the back, so it doesn't quite add up. I am missing more shadows on her front, especially the chest and the part of the dress just to the right of her crossed arms. The fox has a similar issue. Btw, the white fur is the most difficult thing you could have chosen to fit into a night scene. The white tops are overexposed in the original stock, leaving no details that you could work with to get a more realistic shadowing easily. I think to make it look realistic, you'd need to paint in darker fur patches in the shadowy parts (and I wouldn't go there cos I suck at painting, maybe you'd do better at it, seems like you have talent in that department).
3) I never ever use pure black for shadows because it makes everything look desaturated and flat. Also, I use different blend modes for the shadows - "normal" I use only sometimes, I use multiply for heavy shadows such as the ones you put in over the bottom of the model and fox and soft light for the softer ones (like you did with the glow: multiple layers, small changes adding up) -- I always put the layer on the different blend mode and then start painting on it so I can see the effect live.
4) On the background blurring, just a little note: you can easily get a photograph with both background and main model sharp, actually I think in that constellation it would be hard to get the dof effect in a real photo (you'd need a good lense, probably a tele lense) because it's a full body wide angle shot. Doesn't mean you can't use the effect in a manip anyway of course
You said you merge your layers because your computer can't handle too many which is too bad I can't imagine merging stuff cos I always change my mind about everything
Btw the reason the soft light layer merging doesn't work is because the soft light blend mode interacts with the background and as soon as you merge it to the model layer, it jumps back to normal mode where the model layer was transparent.

Wow thank you so much for this awesome reply!! I didn't imagine learning so much by doing a tutorial, I should do this more. I think it's easier to critique somebody when you know exactly how they go about doing the manips.
Thank you very much for all of the advice, really gonna try your way of blurring the edges, I've never thought about using that technique.
Lol as for the painting part, I am still very shy about my painting, only recently started practising digital painting a lot, but thanx, I want to eventualy do most of the manip by painting on the effects I want.
And thanks for the answer about the soft light layers, I have been wondering about that for a very long time now, lol.
Thank you so much for the awesome advice, definitely all stuff I'm gonna try out!!!

It's amazing how much you can learn by having to focus on explaining it to someone else And I so agree about the "it being easier to help if you know exactly what people do" part, so maybe it would be cool to get others to record their workflow when mentoring.
I am thinking about doing some video critiques (probably via my main account) - would you be willing to let me do one on one of your images to start off the (hopefully) series? In those I would be able to give a critique on a dev and show a technique or two to help with the (main) problems; plus I could paint over the existing image in case there's stuff like lighting to adjust... If you'd be willing, it'd be nice to have 2 or 3 devs of yours to choose from (so I can pick the easiest for starters ). What do you think?

Oh wow that would be awesome yeah!! I was actually thinking of posting some of my work in a journal for some feedback, I need to get some awesome feedback again so I can advance again. I will note you the ones I think would be awesome, but really you can pick from any of my latest works, like 2013 and 2014...
