Description
This piece was actually a commission from someone that wanted a scene from Walking with Dinosaurs to accompany the redux series. The choice of scene was mine to pick, so of course after a lengthy period of deliberating, given the choice of just one, I picked the sequence that is, for better or worse, what is probably the signature scene from the series and possibly the entire Walking with franchise: the opening of "Cruel Sea" where the Liopleurodon snatches the Eustreptospondylus from the beach in a bait-and-switch, although here I've changed the species, as in the redux, to Pliosaurus and Juratyrant.I mentioned it in passing in the 'Cruel Sea' redux, but shortly after I finished it, there was a study revealing that there is renewed evidence of giant pliosaurs from the Kimmeridge Clay (it's not optimal considering it's only four partial vertebrae), not of anything even close to what Walking with Dinosaurs was endorsing, but a +10 metre animal is still nothing to sneeze at. This would be an animal in the range of 10-12 tonnes in weight, making it by far the largest predator on Earth during the Jurassic, much bigger than any theropod dinosaur known from the period.
I didn't revise the chart to include the new Abingdon pliosaur find due to its fragmentary nature, unknown classification (it's probably Pliosaurus though, considering that's the only pliosaur genus definitively known from the formation), and no information on the strata in which the fossil was located, but this illustration makes use of the fabled giant pliosaur as the old male that is "big even for his kind" in the episode, although an ~10-11 metre individual of a species which normally reaches ~9 metres is easier to stomach than a 25 metre individual of a species that (supposedly) normally reaches 18 metres.
Also yes, the Rhamphorhynchus are out in the day, but generally animals which are "diurnal" and "nocturnal" are not 100% strict, and you could also easily interpret them as returning to their coastal roosts after a night spent fishing out at sea.

This picture could be seen early on my Patreon , as are many other drawings (most will be posted here eventually). If you want to support me with some coinage or are especially eager to see new art from me, you can throw some funds there. I'd really appreciate it!
