Both are teenagers belonging to a non-human race (Grimwalker/Beastfolk) who are usually confident yet also dorky at times.

Initially, they were both not really social with others outside of a few people. But as the story progresses, they would both begin to be kinder towards others yet still quite confident.

Their softer side began to show through affection towards a small animal(s). (Hunter with a palisman named Flapjack/Karyl fawning over cats).

Both are able to channel their magic through a staff.

Both serve a powerful and cruel tyrant (Emperor Belos and Mana Senri), working as their right-hand men who do the dirty work, at the same time also being related to said tyrant (Hunter thinking that he is Belos' nephew/Karyl being Mana Senri's niece).

Both were very loyal yet also fear said tyrants. It is also implied (or shown in Karyl's case) that they were sometimes abused by these rulers. Their loyalty towards said tyrants would begin to waver as they spend more time with others.

Both were briefly controlled by them at one point in the story (Hunter being possessed by Emperor Belos/Karyl was brainwashed by Mana).

Both are initially antagonistic towards a kind-hearted and eccentric female (Luz Noceda and Pecorine) before eventually softening up and becoming good friends.

Both would originally join a group with not so good intentions in mind, until they started growing attached towards the people in it (Hunter joining the Emerald Entrails to seek out new recruits for the Emperor's Coven/Karyl initially joining the Gourmet Guild so that she could spy on them).

Eventually, both would rebel against their relatives alongside their newfound friends after the tyrants' horrible actions came into light and reaffirming that said tyrants were simply using them as a tool for their own goal.
