Description This is yet another pen and ink project. It is based on a figure I saw in a dream.

I wanted to portray the image of beauty that so many women strive to become--shattered, in the mirror.
What the figure represents is the result of self-loathing and the constant torture that so many women around us endure.
It is what their bodies come to look like after their irrational physical conditioning to become what our society has come to call "Beauty", thus the title.
You'll also notice the slit wrist...this was my attempt at emphasizing the sadness and depression that accompanies a woman's inability to become an image of perfection that cannot be acheived.

I hope you guys can appreciate the meaning as well as the art.

Wow. Excellent work.
What a powerful piece; it's very truthful and haunting - it really makes one think twice, even more so if you are trapped in society's image of "beauty."

this pic tells the truth... i dont know why some people would go so far to look so beautiful but in the end bad things happen if you do it the wrong way...

I'm sorry about your friend...
I think lots of people know someone who has an image complex or an eating disorder, so this piece is pretty relatable for most.

wow this is a very powerful image. Also is disturbing, but what i really like about it is that its the TRUTH. Society has to realize that this is not beauty.

I really really love your piece.

I don't mean this to be sexist, but what strikes me most about this is that you, as a young man, drew it and had such insights about it. You're correct; women and girls have always faced huge pressure to be 'beautiful', especially in this age when from a young age girls see fashionable clothes on rail-thin models and think they have to look like that in order for men to be attracted to them.
To be reassured that some members of the opposite sex do fathom the warpedness of this concept is wonderful.
And it's well-done. ^_^

I really appreciate your insight.
I always just found it so sad that girls had to face these pressures throughout their lives.

Granted, it isn't entirely girls facing these pressures.
But that's another project.

It's not right, what so many girls and women stive to be this way. I know girls close enough to this who think they're fat. I myself, have even tried to become this in an unhealthy way..But I've moved past that.
Wonderful job!

JosefBlack In reply to ??? [2005-08-29 09:20:53 +0000 UTC]

I firmly believe that you should not look at the outside of a person. People's inner beauty can be masked by someone who is "overweight." Our society's standard of beauty doesn't just force women to change their bodies, but it also forces them to change their minds. Would anyone starve themselves just because they felt like it? That's a pretty simple question, if you ask me. No, they wouldn't.
I'm not saying that outer looks have nothing to do with it, it's just that our society tells us what outer beauty is. Thinness is beauty. Blonde hair, blue eyes, large breasts, long legs. That's a terrible standard to conform to.
I'm a man, and I might not have to live up to that standard, but there are standards for men as well, barely any of which I match. So I think that I understand standards of beauty to a certain extent. Let's face it, trying to be "beautiful" is a dead-end road.
All in all, I think people should just try the best to take care of their bodies rather than alter them to match beauty.

Heh. That turned into a rant fast. >_>;

i totally agree with you, hun. in this world we live in today, i as a girl i am considered 'fat' and 'ugly', and i've decided that i don't want to look beautiful if that's the definition of 'beauty' today's society has. also, no offense, but girls have much stricter criteria for 'beauty' than guys do, hun. just saying.

Thanks for the insight.
In this piece, I tried to convey the torment and turmoil within the figure's mind with the obvious act of immense sadness, the slit wrist. It really is sad that the standards of society that so many adhere to can cause them so much physical and mental anguish.

That is so true.. it's really sad how society has turned the word 'beauty' into something that only deals with looks.. beauty comes from inside.. not outside >.<; damn society.. *shrugs* oh well.. nothing we can do i guess. For the picture it is very nice and tells a very true story, i personally like how you've drawn the female. it really shows what some girls are dumb enough to go through. starving themselves, plastic surgery.. they just want to become a darn thing that's not meant to be real.. like the barbie doll... so fake and nothing like what this so called 'normal' society also changed around.... *shrugs* no adays everything sucks o.o; I have to fav this, it's a must.

seriously though this really appeals to me mostly because i understand the point your making, but i also like how you've exaggerated the planes of the bones and diminished the skin past that of even an annorexic. it's very harsh and drives your point home like a nail um.. driving um, home?
