This cartoon appeared in the Dutch Opinion magazine, 'de Humanist'. (issue 2, 2006)At the time, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the re-election of mr. Lukashenko, president of Belarus, or as some call him: dictator of Belarus. The EU and the US were pretty much demonizing him, calling Belarus the last dictatorship of Europe, whilst Russia supported him and in some cases even glorified him.
Altogether, it was a very typical scene.

согласна. Лукашенко - лучший президент. А не нравится - пускай валят в Украину. Я вот живу в Испании и мечтаю побыстрее уехать отсюда. Беларусь лучшая страна с лучшим государственным устроем.

Here is my take on Bat'ka Lukashenko: he is looking out for his own country. Compared to many western governments, Belarus is focusing on #1 - Belarus in this case - just like America should be looking out for America, Poland for Poland, etc. So what if he keeps old Soviet policies alive; I think some things of the old Soviet Union (Belarus being a former Soviet republic herself) do work, and he's making sure of it. Shows the western media will do anything to belittle a government that is less western (no offense, of course, and to me, the west is garbage) when Belarus is doing good.

I think Europeans should go there and take a look around Belarus before judging. The surrounding countries, with "democratic" governements, are sinking in chaos: Belarus is not. Everything works, from public transports to municipal streets cleaning.

I agree you on that, to a degree. But the fact does remain that it is not a working democracy. I'm not sure if such a thing exist. But freedom of speech and expression is the first and foremost step toward democracy.
