Description
Silver Leaf bounded out of the front door and toward the field where she normally met Casper and Romiel. It was a beautiful weekend morning and her mother was out of town for a recital, so there were no extra classes today.
“Casper!” She called out as the green wyngling came into sight, to which she received and an excited flurry of waving. “Where’s Romiel today?”
“Hiiii!!” Casper looked as if he wanted to rush forward, but didn’t want to leave the stuff he had with him behind. “He’s gonna join us later!”
“What you got there?” Silver asked as she came to a stop, catching her breath.
“Well, my brother and his friends all have nicknames for each other, so I thought it’d be fun to pick some out for each other!”
“What’s a nickname?” Silver asked, cocking her head to the side.
“It’s like a super special name that your friends give you!” Casper said excitedly, “My brother says sometimes it’s even better than your real name!!”
“Woah.. that sounds awesome!” Silver cooed in awe, “How do we start?”
“Well, the rules are very strict!” Casper pointed a claw sternly, “My brother said that you can’t choose your own name, someone has to choose it for you.”
“Will you choose mine for me then?” Silver asked, hoping that he’d agree.
“Of course! And you can choose one for me!!”
“Yeah!” she paused to think for a moment, focusing really hard on what could work for Casper…”Wow... I never realised how many words there were.” she said after a while.
“Tell me about it,” He replied, clearly having already dealt with the problem himself “That’s why I have this!” He placed the large book in front of her with a thud.
“Titles and Occupations,” she read.
“Woah, you can read?” Casper said in awe.
Silver stared at him for a moment, “Can’t you?” she asked, confused as to why he’d bring a book with if he couldn’t.
“Yeah, of course I can!” came the bubbly reply, “I just didn’t know you could too -- that’s awesome!”
Silver smiled and rolled her eyes at her easily impressed friend. “Are those to help with nicknames too?” she asked, looking at the fruit he had brought along. She recognised the Crestump, but the other two were foreign to her.
“Yes and no,” Casper grabbed the crestump, “This is ‘cause they are my favourite and these,” he grabbed hold of a cluster of colourful berries and one large blue drop shaped ones, “These are going to make everything more fun!”
“What are they?” She asked, taking the shiny, blue, berry in her paws and looking it over.
“You’ve never seen these before?” Casper asked, surprise painting the wynglings face.
Silver shook her head.
“Man, that sucks, these are the best!” Casper pulled a bright orange berry from the cluster and popped it in his mouth, “Hear that?” Silver gasped at the high pitched sound coming from her friend's mouth, “They make the best party snacks!”
“The berry did that?” She asked, shocked by the effect.
“Yeah!” Casper said, his voice returning to normal once more, “They don’t last long, but they’re super fun! Give it a try!” Casper gestured at the large berry she still held.
Silver looked at her nervous reflection in the shiny skin before she hesitantly took a bite. The berry almost popped it was so juicy, it soft sweet and sour taste filling her mouth, “It’s so good,” she nearly dropped her sugary treat at the words, she’d expected the same effect as Casper’s berry, but this one had made her voice super deep.
Casper had been watching in silence until that moment, but had been unable to stop himself from laughing, “Your face is so great right now!” his managed between fits of laughter. The laughing caught onto to Silver and she giggled, the berry’s effect making her sound all the funnier. It wasn’t long before both wynglings had abandoned their previous plan and were swapping between the two berries, impersonating all the adults in town.
After some time the shenanigans came to an end, partially because they were running out of berries and mainly as there were no adults they knew of left to impersonate.
“Right! We better pick out names before Rommy gets here!” Casper said, “He doesn’t want one, so he’d be bored with this.”
“Right!” Silver said, determinedly flipping over the book and looking through the different names. After some sifting through she spotted something that really caught her eye. “Oh, this one gives me an idea!”
“Gemsmith?” Casper read, sounding somewhat disappointed at his potential nickname.
“Yeah! My Mama had a Gemsmith make her a broach for her show from something called a Sphene. It’s this super pretty green stone!” Silver paused for a moment to look at Casper, he looked emotional, she winced, her ears drooping “I’m sorry if I was supposed to take it from the book, it just looked like you and-” Her thought was cut short as Casper barreled into her and crushed her.
“Oh my Chii, Silver, it’s so wonderful! You are so kind to think I look like a gem, I love it!!!” After nearly having the air squeezed right out of her, she needed a moment to catch her breath.
“Yeah?” she asked between breaths, “Glad you do!”
“I have the perfect one for you too!” Casper said excitedly., “I spent the whole of this morning looking through for one!” Grabbing the book, Casper flipped through the pages, looking for the chosen name as Silver excitedly bobbed in anticipation “Here it is!” he turned the book towards her and pointed a claw at the word.
“Alchemy,” She read, “A seemingly magical process of transforming or combining elements into something new.” Silver looked at the word, it was certainly a pretty word, but... “How does it suit me?” she asked.
“That’s simple!” Casper said, “You use simple moves and music when you dance and they magically become a story so pretty that it makes you want to cry! Even Rommy nearly cried at your recital!” Casper put a claw nervously behind his head, “Don’t tell him I said that.”
“Hehe,” it was nice to know he had a soft side too. “Alchemy,” she repeated, with a smile, “It’s perfect!”
“What’s perfect?” Romiel asked as he approached the duo.
“Rommy!” Casper jumped up immediately, squeezing the life out of the orange wyngling, who always seemed to almost enjoy the well-meaning torture. “We picked out nicknames!”
“Oh? What did you get stuck with?” he asked, looking at Silver.
“Alchemy,” she said, smiling widely, the more she said it, the more she loved it.
“Alchemy huh?” After a moments thought, he nodded with a smile, “It suits ya. What about you Cas?”
“Silv--I mean, Alchemy, chose Sphene for me!” he beamed.
“The gem?” Romiel asked, to which he received two shocked looks “What?”
“You know what that is?” Silver asked.
“Well yeah, my dad’s a Gemsmith, he just made something with one of those.”
Casper gasped excitedly and hugged Rommy tighter. “It’s fate!!” he squeaked into the confused wyngling’s ear. “Isn’t it just so perfect Rommy?!?!” he asked, finally releasing him from his vice-like grasp. Silver mouthed that she’d explain later to the concerned look he flashed her.
“It’s perfect, it’s probably the only thing out there as bright and sparkly as you, Cas.” It was hard to tell, but Silver could have sworn she saw Rommy’s red cheeks get even brighter at the smile that put on the newly dubbed Sphene’s face.
Some simple writing for now. Will explain the fun berries at a later point (just need to finish shading them haha.)
