Previous Part Here >>After the past week's classes, Beau was feeling a bit more comfortable with the idea of going to class with all the other wynglings, though, he hoped there would be no need for large groups working together... Arriving at the dojo, a little too early perhaps, he found himself having to wait for the others. He had taken the time to practice the stretches he had learnt in his first week. He found they calmed his mind somewhat, helping him feel more ready for the soon to be busy building.
The class was simple enough, balancing or strength training both seemed like great things to learn, especially the strength. Beau wanted to grow up strong so he could protect others, so with determination, he rushed toward where the harnesses were. His eagerness shattered when he saw what a harness actually was.
A leash... it looked fancier than the one his master had used, far worse in fact, something that clung onto your entire body, not just your neck, there was no way he'd get out of that once it was on...
The faces of the wyngling's around Beau no longer looked as friendly as they had before. Did they want to tie him up too? His master had wanted to come here specifically to remove his free will, had these wynglings already lost theirs? Perhaps they were being controlled by his master's friend... Beau's legs shook as he stared on in horror, his heart pounding in his chest. A wyngling, he wasn't sure which, approached him, harness in paw and offered to put it on him. "I...." he whimpered, taking a step back as they came closer and then another...a few more before he spun around and ran his legs carrying him as fast as they could, he needed somewhere safe, somewhere quiet where he could get away from him.
Tears stung his eyes as he darted towards the dojo building, running into the back where he mercifully found some rooms, he ran into the first open one and closed the door behind him. Alone was good, it was quiet and he could finally breathe. He gasped for air between sobs as he steadied himself against a nearby wall. His mind battling between the reality of the smiling wynglings wearing the horrible leads and the fear that they were something far more than training tools.
It wasn't long after that, that Beau heard someone else enter the dojo. How could he have been so foolish, of course, the other students would have told their master what had happened and where he had run off to. Padded footsteps echoed through the building along with the soft clicking of claws on wood " Hey Beau? ...where are you?" a voice called out as it entered the building, slowly making its way towards the rooms. He heard a door open and felt his heart sink, they were going to find him and take him away. " Hey come on big guy where are you, what's the matter? " another door opened, closer this time, and Beau fought back the urge to run.
Breathe, he needed to breathe. Trying his best, he took long deep breaths, desperately trying to fight back the urge he had to bolt through the door, right past the voice outside.
"Listen Beau...if you're here that is. " the voice sighed, stopping in front of Beau’s hiding place, the wyngling cowered at the sound of the voice, so close now, but the door never burst open. The handle never even moved, Beau waited in suspense for a horror that never came.
"Um...look I don't know what happened and I'm sure I probably won't understand. But if you're scared of something, it's okay. " they weren’t going to come in? " It's ok to be scared of things, but it's also ok to talk about why you are scared, maybe I can help you ?" another sigh outside the door. Beau’s racing mind was slowly starting to calm down, the intimidating voice now a familiar one.
“Miss K’unlun…” he whispered under his breath.
"Do you want to know what scares me?"
Beau had managed to calm down enough that he felt like he could finally breathe once more, but he didn't reply, his voice seeming to have been stolen away by the fear. Some part of his mind wanted the adult to know he was there and though his very soul seemed to scream no to the action, he knocked his paw weakly against the door.
He waited in anticipation for what would happen next as his mind yelled at him for daring to give away his safe hiding place, but the door still remained closed. After a pause, there were a few steps away and then a soft thud.
"Would you believe I'm scared of teaching?" came her voice, gentle and calm "Without Master Suvash here, I almost didn't open the dojo ...because I was scared of teaching by myself. I did teach by myself before...but I knew Suvash was nearby to fix my mistakes. " Beau listened as she spoke, the soft tone of the voice helping to ease his racing heart further.
The idea that an adult could be scared seemed so foreign to him. His master had never appeared frightened in any way, neither had any of the adults he'd met, but Miss K'unlun said she was? He looked around the small room, this wasn't what he wanted, he didn't want to be locked away and alone anymore, but, how was he supposed to put that fear aside?
"How...," he said faintly, his voice breaking slightly as the tears tried to choke his words, "how can you teach if you're scared?"
"Well, I'm always afraid of making mistakes and making not only a fool of myself but to Master Suvash as well. He took me in and trained me since I was your age and I wanted nothing more to be able to be just like him and be a good teacher....but of course If I do a very bad job, in Sol'Falla tradition that would mean that Suvash did a bad job teaching me...and he's not a bad teacher. He's one of the best teachers I've known in my opinion." Miss K'unlun sighed,
"I'm scared to teach because I just don't want to let him down after all he's done for me, but I also don't want to let others down. It is my job to keep everyone safe as well as make sure everyone understands....if I did a bad job then that can put a lot of you in danger."
Beau listened quietly to what she had to say. She certainly wasn't a bad teacher, but he understood why she felt the way she did. Maybe if she understood, she could help him?
"I don't like the harnesses," he whimpered, "they remind me of my master." Beau’s chest knotted up at the word master and he found he needed to take a few calming breaths, to steady himself before he could continue, "he kept me tied up a lot....I'm scared he'll take me back and take what's me away..." Beau held his arms tightly against his chest, holding together what little composure he had left. He hadn't spoken about this with anyone before and it was proving to be harder than he ever thought it would be.
There was a long pause before miss K’unlun spoke again " ...oh Beau," the voice was quiet, she sounded almost sad? Did adults get sad as well as scared? He knew they got angry, but he’d never seen one sad before.
" ...do you have any idea how strong you really are?" she asked, much to his surprise "You are, without a doubt one of the strongest wynglings here Beau...do you know why?"
Beau sighed, maybe she didn't understand after all. "I'm not strong Miss K'unlun. I could never stand up to him, I could never escape...I tried a few times, but I was too small and weak..." Beau felt a new wave of sobs coming on as he struggled on, "I tried to never give up, but I did." he choked angrily, "I let him win..." he was quiet for a bit before he continued. "Right before I met Mr Fennel, I gave up hope."
"Yet, here you are," K'unlun affirmed, sounding sure of what she was saying.
"You could have run away Beau, you could have run off into the bushes and left this place. But you didn't, and even though you are shy you still practised with everyone at the dojo. There were many many times that you could have turned around and left, but yet you stayed....it takes a great amount of courage to fight your fears and your urge to run from what scares you. " she paused, allowing his min to catch up. Was she right? Was he strong?
"When I told Suvash about what scared me, he laughed at me" K'unlun pause a moment, "He said that everyone is scared of something, don't believe anyone that says they are not scared. Because they are either just trying to impress you or they are so full of themselves they don't want to appear weak. A true Sol'Falla warrior isn't judged by how hard they can punch or kick, sure it helps...but its the mastery of yourself that makes you the greatest warrior of all. "
Did that mean his master was scared of something too?
"Don't compare yourself to your master, your master was bigger than you."
He wiped his eyes with his arms, trying in vain to dry his tears. She was right, he was still there, he hadn't left, he hadn't even considered that he could. He had to be there, so he could be stronger and protect himself and everyone else from his master.
After a few deep breaths, the tears finally stopped flowing, his mind feeling clearer he looked about the empty room and then to the door. He really didn't want to be alone anymore. With a bit of hesitation, he got up and slowly opened the door, finding the brightly coated wyngro waiting patiently outside for him.
She smiled warmly as he exited, something so foreign and strange to him, the idea that his presence could make anyone happy seemed an oddity. Such a warm smile, in fact, an idea crept it’s way into his mind, feeling braver after his teacher’s gentle words he decided to not push it back.
"Miss K'unlun," he said, his eyes fixed on the floor. "I don't want to be scared and alone, it's cold and sad. Do you think..." he paused for a moment before looking up at his teacher once more, "could you hold me? Like some other wyngling’s adults do when they drop them off?" Beau dropped his eyes back to the floor, worried he was asking too much, "it's just, they look like they're happy when they do and...I wanna understand..." he muttered almost under his breath.
There was no reaction at first and Beau hazarded a glance at the mighty teacher, she looked so sad, almost as if she too wanted to cry, he knew it, he shouldn’t have asked, it was wrong to ask...as he was mentally kicking himself for being so foolish Miss K’unlun scooted forward, one of her large clawed arms pulled him toward her fluffy mane as the other rested gently behind his head. At first, he panicked, before he realised that she was giving him what he wanted.
"A hug...it's called a hug little Beau " Kunlun said softly, giving him a tiny nuzzle with her cheek, a single tear roll down her cheek and onto his.
"A hug?" he parroted back, he tried to get his arms around Miss K'unlun to return the hug, but they were simply too short to do much more than get buried in her mane. He leaned into her soft, warm mane and held what he could manage to tightly, closing his eyes as he did. It felt odd at first, but it felt warm and safe and for a moment Beau thought it was silly for him to have been so scared. Miss K'unlun was good, she would keep him safe from his master and she would teach him how to keep everyone else safe too. "Thank you." He said after some time, somewhat reluctant to pull himself out of the hug, "I'm ready to go back to class now, but..." he looked up at her apologetically "will it be ok if I don't use the harness?"
K'unlun nodded and gently rubbed his head with her paw " Of course you can, if you want...I can show you some tricks on the wooden poles".
Beau considered her offer for a while before responding, “I think I’d like that.” he said.
Back at the poles, Beau had found that before he could learn any of Miss K’unlun’s cool tricks he first needed to learn how to stand on them. It would have surely been easier had his feet remained smaller, but lately, they had been getting bigger and his front legs seemed a bit longer too. Walking had felt a bit odd, but he hadn’t noticed it as much, now that he actually needed to be more precise though, it was very apparent…
Difficult or not, Beau was determined and after what was a wobbly start he finally got a better feel for things. When Mr Fennel had come to pick him up that afternoon he had hesitantly requested to stay longer. The large, spiky adult had agreed and waited patiently while Beau continued to practice, only calling him away once the sun had started to set.
A big thank you to Rosedraq for helping me write the story by roleplaying this interaction between the two. I wish I could have included your lovely descriptive writing for the lemon lion, but sadly I had to convert it to one perspective for the sake of flow. I hope I did her justice.

Yeah, you can slow grow your wyngro, as long as you don't add any new upgrades until they are fully grown.
