Naaah, it's perfectly fine. I wouldn't even call it an oversight to be honest.
It's been stated by Rebecca Sugar that gems go by female pronouns, and they do generally look female. But due to miscommunication and artistic liberties, there are gems of more than the "female persuasion" in the fandom-created characters. So I just like to be sure, ha ha.
There is also a certain breed of people who will absolutely *flip their shit* if you get that kind of thing wrong.
