Henry Hoy's only locomotive design.

Class 26 was a simple design in theory, a bigger tank engine based upon Aspinall's Class 5 Radials, for heavier trains and steeper gradients that the 2-4-2's simply couldn't handle, they were in many cases the same in some areas, sharing the same wheels 5ft 8inch, but were built with the same boiler used on Aspinall's 'Highflyer' and Coal Engine types.

They were originally destined for the services in Manchester, Rochdale, Oldham, and Bury, after being built in 1903 they were not immediately allocated to these services as a shortage in electrical motive power on the Liverpool-Southport Line necessitated their need to work the line.

After the shortage was solved they moved to their designated lines, and the flaws started piling up, the first problem was their weight at 77.5 Long Tons, which for everyone who isn't British, 78.7 T's, their long ridged wheelbase caused damage to curves, the center flanges were removed causing less stress, this caused the adverse effect of derailments on track which was slightly out of alignment and particularly notably at junctions.

It should be noted that this seems to have been due to the larger driving wheels, Note how the 9Fs didn't have this issue, to add to the list were leaky side tanks, and poor stopping ability.

It was like the Murphy Law Locomotive, with problems at every corner, quite literally.

They were unsurprisingly withdrawn very early on with Hughes modified Radials the Class 6 coming online to take their work, three Members No's 202, 404, and 125, were withdrawn before the grouping the second member of the class taking 11700 in LMS days, with members all gone by 1926, this being only in withdrawals all had been scrapped by 1928 Engines would have their center flanges removed along with their coal rails in 1911, having mainly been allocated to shunting by this point.
