no trespassing sign
story by EJJGGG ( eejjgg.deviantart.com/ ) :
Whitehorse seemed to be a normal village on the mountains. Quite isolated, small and known for it´s wonderful views and it´s meadows and forest, the town was always the core of every strange story and legend that could be heard around the region. During generations, Whitehorse seemed to be frozen in time. Nothing changed, everything remained just the way it was centuries ago and that was maybe the biggest attraction of the village…that it has made it´s way into the XXI Century without losing the medieval and mythical soul that was it´s trademark.
Every child on Whitehorse knew about the strange meadow at the north edge of the village and every stranger also had heard about the legends. For some reason, the roads never went further and the ancient ways never traversed the forest considered long ago ´´sacred´´. And this couple was no exception. None knew the exact extension of these forests and none knew exactly what laid behind…only a vast extension of forests and meadows crossed by silver rivers that sparked in golden under the sun.
The place was officially considered a natural reserve and, therefore, none found strange that the entire place was surrounded by a wooden fence filled with signs of ´´No trespassing´´ In fact it was pretty much what anyone could expect to find in a natural reserve perimeter. The adults always told the kids to stay away from that area and not only because It was a protected natural zone…they also said that people who entered there and trespassed the sacred forest would suffer from the wrath of the ancients….´´The wrath or the blessing. None knows for sure and none is brave enough to take risk´´ Was always the last words everyone said when telling that tale. A tale that has not changed from centuries.
But everything changes and Whitehorse was also known for being a place of change. A place where new tales could begin…or that is what both Lawrence and Zoe has learnt during their childhood. For everyone that knew the couple, it was crystal clear the strong bound they shared. As childs, Lawrence and Zoe could always be seen together, playing and running around, sharing laughter and fun…as they grow, so did the connection they shared. It was no surprise for anyone when, in the early twenties, the couple of friends declared each other the love they shared and started a whole new life as boyfriend and girlfriend. And they were the perfect couple, both intelligent and curious.
They have just returned from the city where they studied at the University. Being the only two among the youngs of the town that reached the University, both Lawrence and Zoe were a pride for Whitehorse and also an example of how deep love can reach. But their time at the University has also changed their mind…and that drove them to see things in a very different way.
One day in summer, Lawrence and Zoe were walking together around their favorite meadow, a place where they have shared most of their most wonderful moments since their childhood and that now brought them sweet memories. Caressing the boy´s hand, Zoe leaned over his shoulder and smiled as they walked.
´´I remember when we played here….´´ She muttered ´´We played hunter and prey remember?´´
´´How could I forget´´ Smiled Lawrence ´´Having you around walking in all fours and me chasing you with a stick pretending it was a shotgun´´
´´Mum always told me against playing here, you know, for the sacred meadow. She said that it could be dangerous to be that close.´´
´´You know the strange stories´´ Continued Lawrence ´´As far as we know, old time druids performed rituals on that place and some still believe that the magic is in the air.´´
´´Oh, dear…yes. We really feared coming closer. I remember reaching the fence once as we played and imagined how wonderful it could be to simply be a true animal and run all along these meadows and endless forest´´ Continued Zoe, walking towards the wooden fence.
´´Yes, you have always been quite a free spirit´´ Lawrence walked along with her.
´´Someone saw me. Remember? My mom kept me like…a whole week at home for making sure I would never come that close again. I cannot imagine why people fear that place so much…it is just a forest after all´´ Zoe smiled as she breathed deep and enjoyed the wonderful smell of the flowers and the trees surrounding the area.
´´Well, it is all the druid tales you know. ´´
´´Yes…I know…´´ With a wolfish smile, Zoe walked towards the wooden fence and then rested over the edge of the sacred meadow. ´´The wrath or the blessing of the ancients. None knows for sure and none is brave enough to take the risk.´´
´´Zoe what are you planning?¨´ Smiled Lawrence, crossing his arms in front of his girlfriend as she looked abstenmindly at the forests in front of her, the girl´s smile growing bigger and bigger as she rested her arms over the fence.
´´I…When I was a child I dreamt about reaching the edge of that sacred forest. Being the first one to know If there is a curse there…or a blessing.´´ Despite the usual shyness of Zoe, she had a boldness point worthy of a wild and untamed soul that beat inside the girl´s young body.
´´Don´t tell me that you are thinking about…actually jumping over the edge and run there. Are you going to break the tradition Zoe? I never imagined you could do that ´´
´´Oh but Lawrence…my love, it is just and old tale. Do you think that during the centuries none has ever dared to go and try and see what happens? We are adults know.´´
´´That makes me remind what people said about you when we were children…´´ Lawrence walked closer
´´Yes. I know, that I was a wild and untamable soul inside a shy body. That my inner power is unrestrained and all of that…´´
´´Yes, and so far they were totally right. Hope that they were not right about these forests as well´´
´´Only one way to discover it! Are you coming?´´
