I should really use Zippo more often. Or at least finish that big plot story thing that I'd planned like a couple years ago and never got around to finishing it.Pose is all kind of awkward, but I really couldn't be bothered to fix it. I just ended up focusing more on the lines and shading.
Also I can't use the pen tool like a normal person and ended up doing all these with the brush tool. One of these days I will figure the pen tool out.
Minor design change in that his hair is more like hair and less like dreadlocks now, and that there's black marks on his tail.
I think I managed to break my creative slump, at least a little. The majority of this was done in one sitting.

The shading's pretty awesome.
Also the pen tool's mostly used as a tracing tool and/or shaping tool by graphic designers. It's assists them with making curves that look more authentic than what can be done with a line tool. You seem to be pretty comfortable with the tablet, so it's likely that you won't need to use the pen tool at all, unless you're tracing sketches in Illustrator.

Maybe, but I sometimes feel that my lineart doesn't have that smooth, clean feel that people seem to be able to get with the pen tool...

Well, you could try to experiment with the pen tool in Illustrator with some of your traditional artwork. Photoshop's pen tool basically creates a fill layer and masks it with its bezier curves, so it only complicates things more than it should.
