Description AKA: Brunel’s Finest Piece Of Engineering.

Well, here’s my first deviation of the year. And it’s of one of the most famous railway architect in Britain. The Thames Tunnel located in Wapping in East London.

Built by one Sir Marc Isambard Brunel, and his son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who would become one of the ingenious figures in Engineering History, the Tunnel was built as a pedestrian tunnel between Wapping and Rotherhithe. It became the first tunnel to be successfully under a navigable river. The tunnel is 35ft wide, 20ft high, 1,300ft long and 75ft deep below the Thames. The tunnel was built due to poor access the Thames in East London due to docks in the city and width and depth of the Thames.

The tunnel was taken over by the railways in 1869 and because a part of the East London Line, which would later become a part of the London Underground. The station and line and now a part of the London Overground Network. The station is the deepest London Overground and was the deepest subsurface station on the London Underground. I think today that award goes to Westminster I assume because of how close to the Thames it is.

Despite being home to this piece of engineering and having nice artwork on the walls, Wapping is one of the worst stations in London. The platforms are too narrow due to the curve on the line, the station only gets 2 buses serving it, which are the 100 (Shadwell to St Paul’s) and D3 (Blackwall to Bethnal Green), the lift concourse is a mess, with the start of the emergency staircase being below the lifts the stairs are so twisty. There are 104 steps from Street to Train. Despite having lifts, these don’t go to the platform, meaning the station is not step free.

The station is not the worst in London though. That award goes to Covent Garden. Never again, please…
