Description

Being a detective was full of surprises, and Kazuya Miyamoto was pretty much certain that nothing would surprise him after 5 years of being on the force. But never did he once think that his name would be included in a kidnapping case report, not as the detective on the case, but as the kidnapped victim. But as Chief Superintendent Harvey often said, there always was a first time for everything.

------------------

“Ughhhh,” Kazuya Miyamoto groaned as he stretched out on his desk chair, sighing as he felt a few joints pop. He was finally finished with his case report of a solved kidnapping of a young boy at a nearby house, and he was ready to go home. The clock showed it was just past 11 at night, and Kaz allowed himself an amused smile at his situation. It was a Friday night, he was a thriving 29 years old man, yet here he was, filling in reports until midnight. Well, actually, he had been invited to a drink at the local pub with his fellow detectives, but his damn workload had prevented him from enjoying a night out with his friends. Detective work was interesting and fulfilling most of the time, but at moments like these, he wanted nothing but to set fire on all the case files and chuck everything out of the window.

Kaz quickly packed his things to leave. He nodded at the detectives covering the night shift and made his way to the elevator, tapping at his phone. Apparently, Rhea had sent him a video of the others enjoying themselves at the pub. Rolling his eyes and smirking, Kaz pressed play, only to jump about a foot in the air at the explosion of noise from his phone speakers, and he thumbed down the volume-down button on the side of his phone hastily. He glanced around, smiling sheepishly at the people around him giving him odd looks. On his screen, Christian was laughing hysterically at something, Hamish and Logan were fighting over a game of darts, Rhea was singing, or rather, howling the song “Do You Hear the People Sing” from the musical Les Misérables with every ounce of voice she had, and Alik was wailing about not getting the love of his life to notice him. The camera was shaking so badly that Kaz felt quite sick by the end of the video.

U forgit to pick up ur bae, hes stealing mine, come give him a get well kss, said the text after the video, showing him another picture of Alik further bawling his eyes out and wiping his nose on Christian’s shirt. The text was sent just over an hour ago.

Not my bae the last time I checked, Kaz typed and hit send, a small smile playing on his lips as he put his phone back in his pocket. The elevator dinged to indicate its arrival.

He had heard about Alik’s crush on him from his other colleagues a few times, and honestly, he didn’t mind the idea. Alik was hot, like, really hot, and also cute as hell. He was a bit too flirty for his own good in Kaz’s opinion, but once he had his mind on someone, he was very much devoted to that one person and that person only. He was a great detective, and a fun person to be around. If Alik asked him out, Kaz was almost 100% certain he would say yes. But that was the thing; he had to hear it from Alik personally.

The elevator reached the ground floor, and Kaz stopped for a second, considering getting a cup of tea from the 24hr café in the station, but decided against it at the last moment. He had tea at home, and it was only a 30-minute walk away from the station to his flat. Shrugging, he passed through the entrance door, and the uniformed officer standing at guard in front of the building saluted towards him. The young detective smiled and nodded in response.

Kaz sucked in a deep breath as he walked down the quiet streets, allowing his body to finally relax after his long, chaotic shift. Autumn was just around the corner, and he could feel a ghost of a chill on the midnight breeze. The young man briefly closed his eyes as the gentle wind whispered through his short black hair, bringing with it that distinct earthy smell of coming autumn. He welcomed the shift of seasons with wide-open arms; recent summers were simply too hot for him.

Kaz liked the night. There was a sort of charm to be walking the silent streets which would usually be swarming with hectic businesspeople and lost tourists, the only sounds to keep him company being the occasional barking of a faraway dog or the soft buzz of insects crowding around the street lights. The towering buildings around him were dark, save for faint sources of light in some windows here and there, most likely from office workers trying to get some last-minute work finished. Darkness brought him tranquillity, a feeling he urgently needed after the long hours of being on duty as one of the many police detectives of the city.

Today was a really long and hectic day, which was pretty normal for a Friday, and Kaz was glad it was almost over. Don’t get me wrong, Kaz loved his work, his colleagues were great, and his job was very rewarding at times. But hell, sometimes, the only thing he wanted to do, especially after a day like this, was to jump into his bed and hibernate for the next month or so. As for today, he couldn’t wait to get back home to dig into the small stash of doughnuts he had bought for days exactly like today. Fuck health concerns -- midnight snacking was what he lived for.

He hummed a small tune as he turned into a narrow alleyway. This alleyway led right out of the business district through an industrial zone, where many factories owned by small businesses were located, before opening up and into a more residential area, which was where he lived in his medium-sized flat.

He had once brought Kyle, one of his colleagues, over to his flat for a drink after a long shift, taking this exact path from the police station to his living quarters, and his friend had chided him for using such a dark and dangerous route.

“Dude, this alley screams ‘magnet for drug dealers and criminals’. You’re basically presenting yourself to the baddies complete with wrapping paper and a ribbon on the top. I don’t think using this path is a great idea if you value your life, man.”

To this Kaz scoffed. “Last time I checked, we’ve been police officers for, what, 5 years now? Drug dealers, criminals, kidnappers… That kind of thing is right up our alley, and yes, pun totally intended. If I were to find any suspicious activity going on here, I know what to do. I haven’t been a cop for all these years for nothing, Kyle.”

Kyle sighed and shook his head. “Well, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

It was true this alleyway wasn’t the cleanest, neither was it well lit. Rubbish and debris were strewn about all over the place, graffiti-covered every possible surface, and there was the constant sound of scuttling and squeaking as dark shadows darted in and out of the countless nooks and crannies. But it was the shortest way from his workplace to his home, the other route took another 15 minutes, and he didn't have the energy to make the effort after his long shift. Plus, in the past year or so since he started using this alleyway, the most ‘dangerous’ thing that happened to him was when he had accidentally stepped on the tail of a scuttling rat, which in turn had leapt onto his chest to sink its teeth into his nose. Who knew rats could jump so high? He was barely able to swat the rodent off before his face resembled a certain evil wizard’s. After that certain incident, it took him a long while before he could go back to using the alleyway again.

Anyway, the chances of him meeting a wicked criminal here were close to absolute zero. So, down the alley Kaz went, wrinkling his nose at the putrid smell of rotten rubbish and rats’ corpses.

But then he stopped. The sound of hushed voices, about 3 or 4 people muttering to one another, came drifting toward him, eerily amplified by the walls of the alleyway. Well, he hadn’t been expecting that. He wasn’t the one to talk, but who on earth would be meeting up in this dingy backstreet at this time of night? It certainly couldn’t be anything good.

Suddenly feeling much less confident, Kaz crept forward, keeping close to the graffiti-covered walls. It was dark in the alleyway, the only source of light being the streetlights at either end of the passage, so he couldn’t make out any people yet, but the voices were definitely getting louder, just a few dozen or so meters away. Goosebumps broke out across his skin, his mind wandering to what his colleague had said to him a couple of weeks back. Had he really come across some drug dealers or some other kind of criminals? What would they do to him if they saw him coming down the alley?

He could turn around and leave. They were still hidden in shadow, which most likely meant they still couldn’t see him either. He could make a u-turn, quietly exit from the alleyway, and pretend this had never happened.

But he couldn’t. If he did, he knew he would never be able to hold up his police badge again with the small sense of pride he always had. The knowledge that he had deliberately run away from a potential crime would haunt him forever.

Kaz took a deep breath and carried on, making his way towards the voices, keeping low. His hands hovered over the waistband of his trousers, patting his belt to see if he had everything he needed close by; his phone, his badge, his handcuffs, and his gun. He could be overthinking this, sure, but Kaz had a feeling in his gut that this was the real deal. And after more than five years in the force, he knew better than to ignore his gut.

The shadows materialized out of the darkness all at once, and Kaz quickly ducked behind an abandoned recycling bin before they could see him. Peeking out, he counted four of them, but he couldn’t see any of their faces.

C’mon, someone give me some light to see by.

As if answering his request, a lighter was suddenly flicked on, and the four shadows all leaned down to light their cigarettes one by one. In that short second, Kaz was finally able to distinguish some faces, and what he saw made an eyebrow rise in surprise.

Chief Superintendent Harvey? What is he doing here? And why the hell is Kyle O’Brien, the guy who precisely told me NOT to use this alleyway again USING THIS ALLEYWAY?

He wasn’t really sure what he had been expecting, but it definitely wasn’t his superior and his colleague from the police force having a smoke with some extremely suspicious-looking people. That said, the other two people looked exactly like the kind of people Kaz saw every day on the WANTED posters at his workplace. Wearing all-black clothing and face masks that hid the most part of their faces (which they had partially lowered to smoke), the only feature Kaz could clearly make out were their eyes, and it seemed to him that these men had seen some pretty messed up things in their pasts. It wasn’t good to judge people by their looks, but seeing these men definitely stopped Kaz from getting out of his hiding spot and greeting his co-workers.

After a few quiet moments of pulling on his cigarette, Harvey opened his mouth. “So, I hope you have a good reason for calling me out here at this time of night. I am a busy man, you must understand.”

The two men in black glanced at one another before the smaller one of them replied in a rough voice, “ ‘Course, Mr Harvey. The Boss sends his regards to you, as well as a word of thanks for all of your work.”

“Well, no good service comes for free, but I am glad the big man is satisfied,” Harvey said as he took a long drag before breathing out deeply, sending out a cloud of smoke into the midnight air. “And? What’s our main subject for the night?”

“Yeah, well, we’ve got a guy from your lot who’s in closer range than what we are comfortable with, so it would make the Boss very happy if you can deal with him?”

“I’m guessing that would be Eriksson, I had been keeping my eye on him recently. Very well, I’ll make sure to throw him off track.”

“Appreciate it,” the small man nodded. “Oh, and by the way, we’ve got a new batch at the base, and the Boss has set aside a few of them he was sure would be up to your liking.”

“Oh?” Harvey tilted his head to the side and nodded thoughtfully. “Then I must make sure to stop by soon. Really, your Boss shouldn’t bother, I’m dropping in more than what is safe, and it’s not really a good idea to risk it so often.”

“Yet you still stop by anyway,” the smaller one said, although Kaz picked up a hint of scorn in his speech. “Couldn’t be coincidence, can it?”

Harvey chortled heartily, actively ignoring the hostile tone of the smaller man. “It is true I do like surrounding myself with the pretty. And as I might recall, you do too, don’t you?” He raised an eyebrow at the small man in black, and the man let out a strong huff of smoke through his nose.

The men continued to smoke their cigarettes in silence.

Kaz had been keeping one eye on his colleague Kyle this whole time, as he knew the man and his ways well. He figured that watching how Kyle would behave would give him the best idea of the situation at hand, and it seemed that he was right. Kyle hadn’t done as much as shift an inch since lighting his cigarette but his eyes were scanning the alleyway restlessly. Kaz took note of a sheen of sweat covering his coworker’s skin, something that often happened when he was really stressed.

Something was definitely wrong here. Even without the two men in black screaming suspicious, there seemed to be something really shady going on. Was this some kind of criminal gang meeting? What did the Chief Superintendent and Kyle have to do with the whole situation? And what did the Chief Superintendent mean, throw him off track?  And surround himself with the pretty? What the hell was the ‘pretty’?

Kaz bit his lip, weighing his options. Obviously, leaving his hiding spot to confront these men was a horrible idea. He did have his handcuffs and gun, but what use could that be against four people? And anyway, he could be mistaken. There might be a completely legitimate reason for this meeting. Then again, what if he was right? This could easily be a corruption scene, and what kind of police officer would he be to walk away on a possible criminal meeting happening right in front of his eyes?  But it was clear that staying here might be dangerous for him.

Which meant he needed immediate evidence of this meeting.

Kaz fished his phone from his trouser pocket, extra careful not to shift the metal handcuffs and revealing his hiding spot to the four men. He tried his best to get a decent picture of the meeting which actually showed Chief Superintendent Harvey and Kyle’s faces, but the lack of light made it very hard, even with the nighttime vision. It took him a few dozen tries to get a good shot, but finally, he managed. Letting out a silent sigh of relief, Kaz very slowly began edging backwards into the shadows, away from the men. He would use the other route to go home. It was a long way, but as far as he knew, it was safer than this alleyway, and right now, that was all that mattered.

Then his phone began to ring.

And here's Part 1 of Badge, Gun, Handcuffs!
The first drawing is done digitally, but I most likely won't keep this particular art media throughout the series.
Would love to hear you thoughts on this! Ideas are always welcome and appreciated, though I can't promise I will use all of them.
Thanks for reading!
