Description Now with Caragen-style coloring! (I hope)

Yay my first deviation! It's not even really mine I just colored it

aha! good to see some shading there: and yes, that is pretty much my style - you've managed skintones very well. for someone who has only posted one deviation, that's pretty impressive! (the skin is better than some of my 2007-8 stuff) i also like that you've added some denim texture to the girl in the foreground.

here are a few pointers if you're interested. (yes, there's a lot of stuff here, but that's just because i'm critiquing everything i can think of!)

linearty-bits:
1 - the girl standing on the right. i thought something looked really odd about my lineart for the shoulder of the girl on the right, until i realised it's because she's wearing a little bolero jacket which hangs out from the body, which you've seen as a bare shoulder. (if you look on her left shoulder (our far right) you can see the other side of the jacket which you've coloured as wall) the cuffs of the jacket are also marked up near her shackles.
2 - the girl standing in the centre. sorry, more unclear lineart! at her stomach, the section you've coloured as bare skin is the waistband of the skirt (they don't just stop at the top of the pleat!) then above that the little triangle between the waistband and the loose shirt is bare stomach. the shirt was intended to be long-sleeved as you can see the ends of the cuffs just below her shackles (the bit you've coloured black)

coloury-bits:
1. you've done good work adding the strands to the hair for added depth. try starting with a darker background tone than you want the hear to end up as, then painting lighter strands on top for a more natural effect (hair closer to the scalp will look darker because it's more shaded) then add a few darker strands over the top to emphasise contrast. check out the hair section here: [colouring tutorial]
2. read a little on colour theory. i know pretty much all my art tends towards muted, earthy colours, but something which really helped me conceptually on more colourful pieces was colour theory and the colour wheel. the blue-purple-pink combo here clashes quite strongly which is a pity as in different combinations any of the tones you chose would work well. [you might find this useful] [and there's always wikipedia] . grounding a scene with complementary or opposing colours really helps the overall aesthetic.

You make it sound like I did everything wrong.

linearty-bits: That makes a lot more sense then what I was doing. I think it probably be more obvious if I were coloring something I drew myself.

colory-bits-1: Oh so there was a hair tutorial! Guess I only read down to dodge and burn.

colory-bits-2: So basically I did the shading and everything really well but screwed up on coloring the lineart.

no no - as i said, for a first deviation it's excellent!
it's not that bits are wrong, just that there are better ways of doing it, and that's something i wish someone had been around to tell me when i started out! ^ ^

anyway yeah - working out which line is which on a totally unshaded lineart is a bit of a nightmare. i had to look twice to see what i'd done (it being from a while ago) and i drew it! but yes, it is a lot easier if you've done both halves and so have the idea in your head.
and with the colours - i suppose (bizarrely) what you did well were the technically skilled bits but could have done better on simple things like which colours to use (which is more about knowledge than skill)

i hope that my critique will encourage you to go on rather than put you off!
