Description
Okies! So My Mother sent this Giant Hyacinth over to my lovely wife, as a little Easter / Get well gift. I decided to get out my close up filters and do a little playing to find out what these dudes will let me get away with. Before I get into what I learned, let me first tell you there was no cropping done on this photo at all. This flower has blooms that are about 1/2"diameter.
What I actually learned.
My lens, which is the 18~55 kit zoom that came with my D-40x is about 2 inches away from the flower itself! Normally, I cannot focus any closer than about 17 inches with this lens. Yes, this would have been a much better shot had I used a bit of artificial light, and a tripod.
I know it would be cool to be able to spring for a $600+ Macro lens.... but considering I don't have that kind of change laying around, I believe these will be fun to try out on the bugs, and flowers this spring and summer.

Nice!
I really need to take a photo class here so I can learn more. Like how to take shots of flowers in broad of day yet the background still turns out black. I just don't get it.

Well, this one wasn't done that way, exactly... I took this shot inside the house with the available light through a window. I used closeup filters, and shoot towards the darker rest of the room. Closeup filters tend to give an extremely shallow depth of field, so the hyacinth shows quite well, but the darkened room just blurs out. You'll also notice I shot it at 1/20th of a second at f/9. I didn't have a lot of light here to play with.
Remember, anytime you have a problem with a shot, you can always ask me!

Yes, I totally agree with her if she mentioned it was a bit hard to shoot. They are lovely plants, in mass, but once you try to shot just one the composition goes to hell in a hand basket. I decided to take a different approach, obviously.
Thanks!

I used available light coming in a back door of our house. Since our kitchen is paneled, in dark pecan, I exposed for the high light, and allowed the DOF to take care of the background. That was helped by the closeup filter as well.
Thanks so much!

Beautifull! I love the contrast the dark backround gives to the light violet flowers.
Hyacinths are one of my fave flowers but I can't have them around the house 'cos Juti gets allergic reaction of the strong smell.

I wish my camera could take photos this close. Exactly what I want. Mine can only be 12 inches away. XD
Very nice light effect and color.
