Description

I think the description below will get updated eventually too, but not now (inb4 i never ever touch it)

Let's cut to the chase: Season 3 of SpongeBob is the strongest season of the pre-movie era. I love it, and on the surface, this season may seem exactly like season 2 yet again but with better coloring, and that may be true... but...

...that's not entirely correct, since there was one major difference that I've been trying to place my finger on that displaces this season from S2, and I think I've figured out what it is: I believe that SpongeBob lost that sense of being a child in this season. He's much more of an every-man and it's demonstrated in episodes like Rock-a-Bye Bivalve and Party Pooper Pants. It makes this season a little on the mundane side even if I still like a majority of these episodes.
I will say though, one big positive this season does poses is that flukes this season has aren't THAT bad (well, y'know, besides Party Pooper Pants), and between the first three seasons, this one has the least number of duds.

The general episode quality is top tier because the average ep here is easily among the best things the series has produced, but the rest is a bit interchangeable, and this made me realize something that affects this season: I don't know why, but looking at this pie chart, season 3 seems to be really small. I can tell that even one episode rating can make a difference, but that doesn't matter because this entire season is a national treasure.

This still means that I still think the comedy in this season is really strong and is even more brilliant than season 2 thanks to episodes like Idiot Box, which honestly shows just how much millage they can get out of a literal bottle episode. You can tell that the animation in this episode had cut corners, but what ultimately drives the plot is Squidward's idiotic fear building up over the course of the episode, and the extremely well-written dialogue. It manages to showcase a subtle, but effective dynamic without even needing to have all three of these characters be in the same physical place at once. If I'm going to be honest, this season actually did a much better job at its plots than season 2. Some of these episodes are the most unique episodes of the series, like The Algae's Always Greener and the famous Krusty Krab Training Video. Both of these episodes are a sight to behold, as the former has one of my favorite premises in the whole series, and the latter is unlike any other episodes in the series in terms of structure, so much so that not even Boat Smarts could capture the way this episode was structured or capture its top-tier satire. Both manage to go a long way in their premises. The former covers every single trope this show has done at the Krusty Krab (Squidward being a grump, SpongeBob being irritating , Pearl annoying "Krabs" for money, "Plankton" trying to steal the formula, unsatisfied customers, etc.) and Plankton's reactions to them all are just glorious. This episode really cemented Plankton as one of my favorite characters on this series.
As for KKTV... do I even need to explain why this episode rules? It's a perfect take on employee training videos, as all it does is throw joke after joke after joke at you... it's pretty much the only episode of the series without an actual story going on. It's more like a sketch, and the amount of subversion put here is marvelous. Every single fourth wall break here has me gasping for air, every single segment in this episode has jokes centered on things that shouldn't even be funny (the whole Hygiene section and Interfacing With Your Boss) but somehow are, and that ending still both frustrates me and humors me both at the same time.

Overall, season 3 of SpongeBob is still a lot of fun. Despite having a dumpster fire of a special, I can say that the comedy in nearly every single one of these episodes was strong enough to weigh this one up to one of the best seasons. I can see both this and season 2 being slight turn-offs since their biggest priority is comedy while everything else comes second, and while it is a problem for season 2, it is not for season 3 because this is probably the 2nd funniest season of the show. It's overall a AMAZING season and I consider it the best of pre-movie simply because it's one of the funniest seasons in the series (top 3 at least) and keeps a consistent quality with almost no dips.

I didn't really like the specials in this season, except for the patchy segments which were hilarious, but Party Pooper Pants was sort of funny for me.

Episode 125a: Pineapple Fever

Synopsis:
SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward become trapped in SpongeBob's pineapple after a storm rages outside.
Fun Fact: Patrick ages 30 years per second in one scene.
Quote: "C'mon Squidward, it'll be fun! While the elements rage outside, we'll snuggle in here and pass the time by playing board games, and playing tic-tac-toe, and drinking hot cocoa, and playing tic-tac-toe, and doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching TV, and drinking hot cocoa, and doing jigsaw puzzles, and playing board games, and drinking hot tea..."
Highlight: Squidward falling from the top of a tornado.

This episode is fabulous. I am surprised that we hadn't had an episode like this earlier, because the premise of Squidward being trapped with SpongeBob and Patrick in SpongeBob's pineapple is such a classic setup with the potential for amazing character interactions between the three characters as they find themselves in a common situation. Season 6 does kind of mess with the SpongeBob-Patrick-Squidward dynamic with episodes like Cephalopod Lodge and Professor Squidward to an extent even though I still enjoy that episode. This episode goes back to a more simple premise where SpongeBob and Patrick are just having fun, meanwhile Squidward has a contrasting attitude and gets progressively more fed up with the duo's stupid antics when he is trying to play with them and in general being very stuck-up. There is even a part where he devises a plan to keep SpongeBob and Patrick from annoying him which backfires on him really badly when he realizes that he is starving and must cross the boundary which he created to get to SpongeBob's refrigerator. This is exactly how a classic episode featuring the trio would play out if they were in this same scenario, and the fact that Squidward's own rules is what bites him in the back eventually and it's a step-up from a random conch shell forcing him to be deprived of food like in Club SpongeBob.

This episode's comedy is also really outstanding. This episode is just packed with back-to-back-to-back jokes the second when Squidward comes into play in this episode. This episode's jokes are a case of them being SOOOOOOO stupid that they are absolutely hilarious. There are so many moments like that such as the quote above where SpongeBob goes on and on and on about what they will do in his house, and then he says hot tea by accident instead of saying hot cocoa. A lot of people say it should have been shorter but what they don't realize is that the reason the joke works in the first place is because of how excessively it drags on which is the main reason why I find that scene memorable. There are other really stupid yet amazing jokes in this episode too such as SpongeBob saying that the lights went out and Squidward responding with "Yes, they did, when you turned them off!". There is also that scene where they are playing Tic-Tac-Toe and Squidward tells SpongeBob that you don't roll to see who goes first to which Patrick says "He's right. You play rock, paper, scissors for it.". One of my favourite parts of the episode is when Patrick cannot place the last piece of the puzzle and they make it so dramatic to the point where he becomes an old man in a matter of seconds. Not long after that, SpongeBob is busy trying to figure out where the FIRST piece of the puzzle goes. And it's not like all of the comedy comes from stupid moments, because a lot of the jokes also come from Squidward's reactions to the duo's antics as well. They are absolutely priceless, and it really makes me feel like I'm watching an episode straight from the first few seasons where a lot of the comedy came from the charming interactions between the characters.

But really the main thing which helps this episode stick out from the rest of this season is the thunderstorm setting featured in this episode. It is very rare that we see a thunderstorm happen in this show, and honestly thunderstorms are one of my favorite settings in animation in general. What I adore about this episode is how it perfectly captures the feeling of being a kid in a thunderstorm. The visuals in SpongeBob's house are really cool, from the random water puddles and leaks in the house to the very dim lighting, and also the fact that this episode constantly cuts to SpongeBob's pineapple being rained upon between each scene and all of that really gives the audience that thunderstorm feel. I really do enjoy the unique atmosphere which this episode provides and all of that is the icing on the cake for what is a really really GREAT episode. This episode is perfection and while I'm not sure yet if I'd place it above Chum Bucket Supreme, this is an extremely entertaining episode for Season 6 and really gives me the classic SpongeBob vibe with it's charming characters which are completely in-character, the hilarious character interactions and it's very high joke-per-minute ratio which great atmosphere to top it all off. Truly a Season 6 episode worth checking out.

FINAL RATING: GREAT EPISODE
