Description
This is a reload animation of my VA G6A2 Tibre carbine (BETA 1.3 version) I made in Blender 3D (v 2.59). I used the robotic hand I made and rigged myself, and this is my first attempt at animating with hands...it's hard.I understand that it isn't perfect. For a first attempt at animating with hands, I think it's stellar!
EDIT: Someone said the action of hitting the bolt release was not violent enough, so I made it more......violent.
This weapon is for a contest (Now over). Check it out here: [link]
Enjoy!

I set up bones to emulate a human hand's bone setup, and set the weight method to automatic. Then, I went into Weight Mode and modified the weights accordingly.Β There is some trial and error when redistributing weight.Β I am no expert, mind you, this is just how I do it.

Sounds good, and it does present very well. I usually chain the fingers with a copy rotation constraint, that way when you turn the tip of the finger in, the rest of the finger can collapse and so on. Keep up the good work, friend.

Thank you for the tip. I'm still a novice when it comes to working with armatures, to say the least.

Yeah. That was the old version of the model that I created, like 1.3 Beta I think. I removed that in the later versions.

Thanks! I'm gonna go further than that however, ima make my own company, so I can run things right.

[link] maybe it would be better "violent" to anim. What do you think?

ttrlabs In reply to ranisdeguery [2012-02-04 15:17:37 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I was thinking of changing it to hitting it with the palm of the hand. Thanks!

It may have been hard, but it was worth it, this is awesome.

First off, this is crazy-good. The gun itself, the animation...just plain awesome. Way better than some games I've seen. The only critique I have, is that it doesn't look entirely convincing when he hits the bolt release. I don't know if it's that the bolt release is static, or that the thumb press isn't very violent, but there's something mildly off about it. Maybe it was my crappy rifle, but I seem to remember that thing took a pretty good slap/poke to snap forward. Again, that's just nit-picking, the fact that you have an animation for pressing the bolt release alone warrants a thumbs up.
So, here:

I'm gonna redo it and make him fist it!
Check back for the edit

I wouldn't say you need to, it's really not extremely noticeable. You did a really good job with it, making the gun react to the motion and such. Once you fleshed out the skeleton, it looks like the thumb would cover the button, which might help. I think most people (outside of movies) just hit it with their thumb. I usually squeeze the rifle with my fingers, and that makes it a lot easier.
Oookay, nevermind, I just realized that you already did it. And it looks sweet. So, good job!

rofl thanks! I'm going to redo it, AGAIN! Seriously, I'm going to make him hit it with the palm of his hand instead of fisting it.

Dude, I feel bad. I shouldn't have even said anything in the first place, because the animation is flat out awesome. Nobody in the world (besides me staring at the screen, sleep-retarded) would probably ever notice that, especially if it were in-game. I couldn't tell you the first thing about the reload animations on COD or Battlefield.
The fist looks badass, and there's nothing wrong with a little Hollywood flair. But it's your call. Is that enough mixed signals for ya?

You don't have to feel bad
I am actually going to redo the animation AGAIN! You got me staring at that part now
Yes, I think I have had my fix on mixed signals for 1 day

I agree with you completely on the bolt release. I swear, I spent 4 hours trying to get that fricken thing to look good, but I just couldn't find a way to make it look violent enough. Ah well, food for thought for the next try

Badass! For me, it should be less "stable" - more swings, drops etc - if you have a replique (ASG, paintball, doesn't matter) then try the reload with it for real and (as my favorite animator says) study your hands and the way they move. (check out ImBrokeRU on youtube)

ttrlabs In reply to ranisdeguery [2012-01-31 22:07:19 +0000 UTC]
Yeah more swinging is definitely necessary. I have a bunch of airsoft weapons that I reload on a regular basis to get an idea of how they move. The hardest part is replicating that in animation. I have already seen ImBrokeRU's work, it's freaking amazing! Of course, he probably has an extra year or so of animating experience on me.

You should check out his ACR animating tutorials (3ds max...) to learn some techniques ;> And good for you, that you train anims with your ASGs. Got an AK? ;D

Yeah, but it is so beaten up (damn sis) that I can't use it for reloading anymore. The stock broke off, the bolt has snapped, and the barrel is in half
