You know, sometimes I stand there at the subway station looking around and wondering about all those different people. Some talk in Turkish, some in French and others use an Asian language. Berlin is a very multicultural city and I'm happy to live here.I wish more people would enjoy difference as I do.

I like it! And I really wish I visit Berlin some day. I've always wanted to go to the USA to enjoy the diversity in cultures, religions and languages (or just accents)
My dad visited Frankfurt before, but he said not many people like to speak English, is that true? .. 'cause then I'd be in SO much trouble, I only speak Arabic, English and a VERY little French
Anyway, Germany is awesome ! And it has a great soccer team

Well, indeed, only few Germans can speak very good English, but in Berlin we are used to tourists, so it's mostly no problem. You're welcome to come here, let me know, when you do some day inhsallah ^^

Genau so ging es mir, als ich wegen meines BOGY-Praktikums immer wieder mit der S-Bahn hin- und herpendeln musste. Wenn ich dann alleine über die Straßen gelaufen bin, in der Straßenbahn saß und am Hauptbahnhof wartete fand ich es total spannend zuzuhören, wie verschieden die Menschen sich um mich herum unterhalten haben, wie unterschiedlich sie angezogen waren und wo sie überall herkamen und hingingen. Ich fand es amüsant mir vorzustellen, wo jeder einzelne herkommen könnte, was er schon alles erlebt haben könnte und wo derjenige nun weshalb hingehen könnte. Absolut sinnlos aber lustig.
Wenn man da so steht und darüber nachdenkt, das all die Menschen, die größtenteils nicht mit einem zu tun haben, genau zu dem Zeitpunkt auch genau da sind, wo man selbst ist und gleich wieder wo ganz anders sein werden, dann bekommt das Wort 'Netzwerk' eine ganz andere Bedeutung.
Einmal sah ich sogar einen jungen Mann mit langem zusammengedrehtem Bart, langen Haaren, auffälligem Schmuck (Armbänder, Halskette) aus dicken Edelsteinen (oder Plastik-Imitaten

Achso, 'Tschuldigung, das sollte ich vielleicht erklären: Also das bedeutet ausgeschrieben nichts Anderes als "Berufsorientierung an Gymnasien". Wir sollten uns für eine Woche einen Beruf aussuchen und uns dort mit vorheriger Bewerbung und allem drum und dran, fünf Tage lang anschauen, ob dieser Job überhaupt etwas für uns wäre.
Ich mag diese Unterschiede auch gerne.

That's something I definately miss about Berlin! Just walking around and hearing so many different languages, and seeing signs over shops and things in Turkish or Arabic or something else. My hometown here in Canada isn't very multucultural in general, but my university is, so it's not too bad.

I lived just outside of Berlin for a year as an exchange student, I was in the city itself though every weekend, and whenever else I could because I love Berlin so much! It's an amazing place.
Yeah, there are plenty of students from a lot of different places at my University. I'm not sure exactly how many come from where, though I know there are many from China. You hear a lot of Asian languages going through the halls.

Once I was chatting in Portuguese with two friends in the U-Bahn in Berlin and two German girls asked us what language it was. Turns out one was betting it was Portuguese, the other was betting it was Polish. I never realised how our languages sound alike (even though we don't physically look Polish).
Now I often turn back if I hear Polish (or Russian) here in London because it sounds familiar.
And yes, you are a lucky person to live in Berlin. Its my favourite city.

Your situation reminds of the last time, when my friends and I went to a musical; there was a school class and my friends and I couldn't agree about whether it's a Northern (Danish) or Eastern European language. (My friends didn't want me to ask those students, I'm still angry that I didn't do it anyway)

Portuguese, like Spanish, has a latin origin so the written part is extremely similar. Also, because both Portugal and Spain were once part of the Caliphate we share several Arab words too. However, the way we pronounce words and the sounds we use are quite different. We (and the Galicians) sound a bit Eastern European.
My girlfriend and I play the "what-language-are-these-people-next-to-us-speaking" game. Most times if we can't get quite get it she will go and ask. I never have the nerve.

We don't learn Spanish but we should. Still, most of us pick it up quite quickly (I think my Spanish is acceptable given that the Cubans always wondered if I was Argentinian).
