Description Alex Vanover
Sex: Male
Aircraft type: AugustaWestland AW109
DOB: February 1994 (22 years old in depiction)

    1. Alex Vanover is an AugustaWestland AW109 helicopter born in Seattle, Washington in 1994. He is 22 years old and the son of Blake Vanover, a UH-60 Blackhawk, and Pepper Barton, another AW109. Alex lived a normal life with his parents, who were married and worked in separate branches of the US military. His father served in the US Army as a medevac helicopter stationed at Ramstein AFB in Germany, whereas his mother served in the US Coast Guard and was stationed in Seattle. Alex was an only child. As a result, he received all of his parent’s attention and affection. He lived with his mother in Seattle, the few friends he had were close ones. He stayed out of trouble and aspired to be like his parents, someone who saved lives. Alex was loved and nurtured by his parents, who did their best to find time to do things together as a family.

    2. In 2001, when Alex was only 7 years old, his father was killed in an accident in Germany. Blake struck a high voltage powerline and was electrocuted, dying instantly. His mother, devastated by his death, never fully recovered. Alex became a referee of sorts in terms of helping his mother control her grief and depression. Though she improved thanks to his support and continued to perform her lifesaving duties, she never returned to her old self. In 2009, when Alex was 15, his mother was killed after going down in bad weather over the Cascades, dying from exposure on an isolated mountainside. With no close kin to take him in, Alex was alone.

    3. As a child living on the Seattle Coast Guard installation, he was close friends with a Sikorsky S-76, named Megan Arevallo. After the death of his mother, Megan, whose parents were considerably wealthy, took him in. Allowing him to stay long enough to enlist in the Coast Guard reserves, Alex subsequently fell in love with Megan. She did love him in return, but she frequently took advantage of his soft heart to get her own way. At 18, he enlisted in the reserves. Not much later, to his shock, Megan became pregnant. Although she manipulated Alex to get what she wanted, Alex blamed himself, believing he’d been too impulsive. He and Megan made an agreement to raise their child. Megan’s parents were certainly appalled, but they allowed the child to be born. In 2012, Megan gave birth to a girl, an AW109 and S-76 hybrid they named Martha. Alex fell in love with his daughter immediately. However, days after Martha was born, Megan left Alex and cut off whatever financial support her parents were providing. Heartbroken and infuriated by Megan’s sudden absence, Alex was not about to give his daughter up. He vowed to raise her on his own.

    4. In the Coast Guard reserves, Alex maintained a praiseworthy record. He understood orders and absorbed them like a sponge; he also possessed an admirable work ethic and was a precise flier, able to improvise quickly. However, on his mediocre salary and with no one willing to help, Alex was forced to resort to theft, lies, and begging in order to get by. He did this not for himself, but for Martha, still an infant helicopter suffering from respiratory difficulties. Though away for many hours of the day and exhausted whenever he was home, Alex loved his daughter and spent whatever spare time he had with her. Try as he might to be a loving and responsible father, he couldn’t make ends meet and was in serious debt. Because of his petty thievery, he had more than a few run-ins with the law, further tarnishing his name and leading to rushed conclusions. Alex meant well and would never intentionally hurt anyone, but his criminal record followed and branded him.

    5. In 2015, at age 21, child services removed Martha from Alex’s custody, branding him as ‘unfit’ to raise a child. Only 3 years old, Martha was placed in Megan’s custody, something Alex was wildly angry about. Visitation and contact were prohibited, due to his run-ins with the law and at least partially because Megan didn’t wish to associate herself with Alex. Because of this, Alex vowed never to repeat Megan’s name. He searched feverishly for his daughter, but everywhere he looked turned out to be a dead end. Heartbroken without Martha by his side, he quietly left the reserves and headed south to Piston Peak National Park in California, where he became a firefighter and respected member of the Air Attack team. At Piston Peak, he finally found the acceptance, understanding, and love he was so desperate for.

    6. Appearance wise and mechanically, Alex is a standard AW109. He has leafy green eyes, like his father. The words ‘Piston Peak’ are painted along his tail boom in black letters. His fuselage is a combination of red and white; a red main fuselage, white upper fuselage, and white bars and stripes on his tail. A black patch is painted across the top of his nose, to prevent glare from shining into his eyes. He bears the serial number ‘895JN’ on his upper fuselage, painted in black letters. On his belly, Alex has a cargo hook, where he carries an orange collapsible firefighting bucket capable of carrying 165 gallons of water.

    7. Personality wise, Alex is mellow and levelheaded. He takes and carries out orders well, but is submissive in the presence of his superiors. When confronted with a situation where he’s unsure of when to act, he’ll hesitate. When informed of what to do and familiar with what is expected of him, he won’t falter. His trust isn’t easy to come by, but once his trust is earned by another individual, he’ll defend and speak for them as though they were a family member. He isn’t shy around others most of the time. When a situation is too great for him to handle alone, he’ll acknowledge that fact and gladly accept any help he can get. Alex is proud of his parents and holds them in a very high esteem, he won’t tolerate anyone insulting their name. Another way to get on his bad side is to call him a bad parent or a criminal. He’s not proud of his past and knows he made mistakes. Calling him a bad parent will not only make Alex angry, it will deeply sadden him, since Martha is no longer with him. In terms of likes, Alex loves flying, making others happy, and living with the knowledge he’s serving a greater cause than himself. He’s the kind of individual who if he were hurt, his first concern would be those around him. Alex is a fan of classic rock and oftentimes sings along to his favorite tunes.

    8. In terms of personal relations, Alex is very fond of Blade Ranger, who he looks up to as a mentor, a fatherly figure, and is one of the few individuals who can break though Blade’s hard exterior and bring out his more tender self. Blade sees Alex as his son, someone he trusts with his life and would have lead the Air Attack crew should anything befall him. He’s also a close friend of Blade’s son, Nelson, an AW109 like himself. With Nelson at his side, the two can get into mischief, specifically pranking. Nelson idolizes Alex, regarding him like the older brother he never knew and the individual he aspires to be. Alex is fond of Maru, who he regards as a ‘mad scientist’; something which makes Maru laugh. He shares a close relationship with all other members of the Air Attack team, who regard him as family. Dipper secretly loves him and wants him as her own, although she comes off as obsessive and over eccentric. When asked if she’s in love, she’ll strongly deny any attachment.

Great background for him too. But he and Martha never reunite?

I drew him first, but his backstory hadn't been written yet.

And no, he never sees Martha again.

Strange, I thought all that in the description was it.

And that is truly upsetting for anybody who's a parent.

It's very distressing for Alex. He always wondered what became of his daughter, whether or not she was happy, did well in school, or had friends. He never knew. All he could do was speculate.

I can't imagine him even going on with living life not knowing what became of Martha.  That is something I would go mad over if it were me.

It's very distressing for him. Occasionally he has dreams about seeing Martha die, which are just as visceral and terrifying as the ones he had about his parents and what it must've been like for them when they died. Alex, after being a firefighter for a few years, he hasn't been able to save everyone. He sees Martha die in dreams the same way he saw actual vehicles meet their fate. And it's starting to drive him mad.

He isn't even real, and yet you feel so strongly?

I guess so?

I guess its my style. To create characters who've come a long way and faced a difficult past, only to make something of themselves and do what's right.

Perhaps so, but for a moment I had thought I'd said something stupid by how I initially perceived your earlier question.
