The so-called "smallpox" epidemics were from the vaccine itself. Again and again. The silly doctors (who didn't know a fucking thing about genetics or DNA testing back in the 18th century, 19th century, or even during most of the 20th century) didn't know what was in their vaccine. They injected it into people, and everywhere they started epidemics of what they called "smallpox" but was genetically HORSE POX.

The epidemics stopped when the doctors stopped mass injecting millions of people with the vaccine that contained A LIVE VIRUS.

Smallpox, the real one, NEVER WENT AWAY.

Personally I'd rather avoid them, because the viruses in vaccinations are usually harmless, but in some of them they are dormant, and can be reactivated inside a cell to reproduce by even minor amounts of radiation. I will admit that this science is still new and needs a lot more research though...
 
But in any case, there are benefits to avoiding large amounts of vaccinations. Everything in moderation.

Yeah. There's also something to allowing the body to build up its resistance to infections naturally. Our bodies are like self-sustaining machines and while they sometimes are broken and need fixing, they are remarkable at fixing and protecting themselves.

Part of my pro-science stance is that I live in a very hippie-dippie community (Santa Cruz, CA) that always falls for the "natural" or "alternative medicine" movements without doing even basic research. My freaking doctor is asking me to try giving up gluten to improve my mood despite there being no evidence of this working and all research confirming that it's just a placebo effect. I'm going to try it anyway to get less carbs in my diet and hopefully lose weight, but I'm tired of being fed pseudo science. I mean, shit, UCSC is where they cracked the Human Genome! How can everyone be so anti-science?!

Vaccinations are not entirely bad when used sparingly against the more dangerous diseases, but done too much can potential increase one's risk of cancer. 
Moderation is good for these sorts of things.
I don't know about the gluten thing. Removing it from the diet can have changes on one's body due to the change in nutrition, but I'm really not too sure about whether it is a placebo or an actual biological change or a mixture of the two.
I don't get the whole anti-science thing though. I'd understand if there was a new hypothesis or theory that credibly could be in violation of an already existing theory, but pseudo-sciences don't really do much to help things.

When it comes to mood changes, there's no evidence that it's anything other than a placebo effect. It can definitely change your body in other ways. For me, I just want to go leaner and cutting out carbs will help with that.

I don't get it either. My best guess is that when people are afraid of establishments–real or not, they get suspicious of modern medicine and reject scientific discoveries that help people.

There is a lot of corruption in modern medicine as well as quota sample 'studies'. It makes sense to be a little sceptical, however to completely refute actual scientific knowledge or organisations that use that knowledge for completely invalid reasons based merely on faith or unfounded distrust is just stupidity.

There are plenty of valid concerns with some of these medicine companies, but conspiracy theories are, for the most part, utter folly.

And yeah, we have a lot of people who outwardly believe in conspiracies out here. "Big Pharma" comes up a lot and when I've tried to talk about some scientific research into genetics (like the recent mitochondrial DNA experiment that saved a child's life), I get a lot of concerned looks. I'm not saying I'm all gung-ho about GMOs or genetic technology, but in theory, there are some wonderful things we could do with them. I never said that the medical industry could not be corrupt. I see this more as a problem with private companies trying to sell medicine (including vaccines) than the idea of medical care or a public safety push, which was the issue at hand with mandatory vaccination.

Furthermore, you'd be well-advised not to read so far into mine and others' support of public safety practices and a stance against wild conspiracy theories at large about vaccines. I don't think of any company as "saintly." Never mischaracterize my words. There are decent people and there are predatory people out there, and imho, medical companies are inherently exploitive and predatory in nature. I'm all for socialized medicine in my country to curb corruption.

Lastly, while I appreciate sources of information for such claims, I wasn't talking to YOU. I don't really believe in most conspiracy theories and am very skeptical. I do think that there is a bit of truth to the "big Pharma" conspiracy theories, however I also think it's way over-hyped and the corruption isn't as bad as some people make it out to be.

I don't like some of the potential GMOs. We almost killed ourselves with Klebsiella Planticola  in the 1990s. So we certainly need to be far more careful about what we create and how it's tested.
However I think that GMO foods could be very good for world hunger. Really if we're modifying the DNA, then it won't have much of a difference to organic foods as it's DNA gets broken down in the digestive system anyway.
