Description
Sorry for the long wait!So... The Problem Solverz. This show, to put it lightly is rather infamous amongst Cartoon Network’s catalogue of original programming. Airing on the 4th in 2011, this now eleven year old series was created by Ben Jones, who previously worked as a co-founder of Paper Rad, an art collective whose work became well known for the aesthetic named “Dogman 99”. The style was evidently influenced by pop and punk art, with the use bright fluorescent palettes juxtaposed to plain RGB and primary colours to create a psychedelic, lo-fi look that became popular in underground culture. Sadly while Jones’ style worked well in still art, the transition to a medium of moving images where everything on-screen needs to be more clearly defined to the viewer as so to follow a narrative… did not go well. If one compliment could be given to the show, it’s that it was definitely experimental.
Just the day after in the year before funnily enough would be the premiere of another series considered highly experimental for its time, and twelve years later is now often held up in high regard as both one of the shows that helped saved Cartoon Network in it’s trying time and set the tone and flavour for television animation in the 2010s. Adventure Time seemed like a fairly simple show at first, following the adventures of a boy and his magic dog going about rescuing princesses and exploring the cutesy and fantastical land of Ooo. Soon enough however the pastel-coloured characters of this world were revealed to have a lot more depth to them, the humour being surprisingly risqué for a children’s programme and stories later down the line touching on daring and mature topics. Whether you prefer the more episodic format of the early seasons or the ongoing narrative in the later ones, the cultural impact of this series is undeniable and there’s certainly a little something for everyone in it.
Also to anyone saying Adventure Time should have been in the March lineup, literally everywhere I looked online it said it first aired on April 5th.
Then on the 14th turning eighteen years old is Clarence. One of the more lax and down-to-earth amongst the CN originals, this series managed to resonate with many people with nostalgic memories of childhood suburbia and was commended for filling in the void for slice-of-life shows that felt sorely missing at the time, to which ever since there have more cartoons of such genre, such as Craig of the Creek and Harvey Street Kids, popping up in its place. Though I personally found myself somewhat off put by the show’s strange character designs, I’ll concede it was a fine enough watch whenever it came on and can see why it’s often held up in high regard in discussions of more underrated programming from the network.
Stay tuned for part 2.
