Description
Here’s part one of three for October.T.u.f.f. Puppy premiered on the 2nd of the month eleven years ago in 2010. Being the third Butch Hartman-affiliated Nicktoon, the show had a lot of expectations to live up to with it preceding both the critically acclaimed Danny Phantom and long-running Fairly Oddparents series. Such high expectations seem to have backfired, as critics have been quick to lob at it for being derivative of the spy genre and falling too much into the tropes present throughout Hartman’s other works. Despite this the show still has a sizeable cult following online, and I honest do think its a decent enough watch if you’re looking for some lighthearted entertainment and don’t mind how noisy it can be.
Also premiering the very same day was the short-lived Jimmy Neutron spin-off series, Planet Sheen. I previously stated in part 2 of the August Nicktoon birthdays that I would only be featuring spin offs if they stood out enough from their predecessor to be worth mentioning, and Planet Sheen… definitely stands out from its predecessor for better or worse. This is probably the one Nicktoon that confuses me the most as to why it exists, and the amount of hoops that were jumped through in its production history to get to the end product are quite puzzling on top of it all. The original pitch from Keith Alcorn and Steve Oedekerk actually was going to be an entirely original show going under the name “Red Acres” and followed an adult astronaut landing on a planet full of hill-billy aliens. The executives at Nickelodeon’s New York division liked what was shown off, but were reluctant to greenlight it due to the absence of a child main character. After some reworking the series ended up being about Sheen Estevez, and the series would go on to garner extreme negative reactions from audiences to say the least. I wish I could give my own thoughts, but it’s honestly been so long since I saw the show that I don’t think I can properly give an opinion.
KaBlam! meanwhile debuted on the 11th in 1996, making it now twenty five years old. This series is notable for being an animated variety show with each skit taking on a different aesthetic ranging from crude yet charming 2D animation of the Henry and June segments to the clay stop-motion visuals of Prometheus and Bob. One segment, Action League Now!, coined “Chuckimation” as a style, which was pretty much just action figures being chucked around coupled with impressive camerawork. The series prided itself on being experimental within the confines of its small budget, as well as being a show that felt like it could be made by 90s kids for 90s kids. While not a show I ever grew up with or see myself resonating with like some others, I do appreciate it for its novelty and can understand why young viewers back then would have liked it. With it how the series slogan is “where cartoons and comics collide”, I get similar vibes off it as I did reading Beano and Dandy comics in both its structure and humour. The characters of Henry and June as well are such enjoyable show hosts that they actually starred in a bunch of bumpers for Nickelodeon, and even with copyright for certain shorts being scattered today I often wonder why they haven’t kept them around.
