Description So I did this for two reasons:

1. I've had an issue with my style of drawing Turbo since...I first started drawing him, and I wanted to finally come up with a better method.
2. I wanted to show people just where I got that "Turbo is actually a kid" concept that I used in Ghost Boy. I mean, all of my GB readers are beyond familiar with it by now, but didn't you ever wonder where I got it from in the first place? Well, I got it from the movie. And here's my evidence.

I've already talked about how I felt that Turbo's attention-seeking behaviors from the movie meant that he must have had some other insecurities that he wasn't showing, and also that it closely resembled the impulsive behavior of a teenager. But for a while, I was stumped on the fact that he looks and sounds like an adult when we finally see his full 3D model. Then I started looking at any screenshots of him that I could get my hands on, and I noticed something odd.

He never looks quite the same in any two shots. As a matter of fact, he actually seems to be getting younger every time his face appears.

Look at it. When he first turns back from King Candy (#1 and #2) you can see an old man. Gradually, he starts looking more like a normal middle-aged adult, albeit one with huge grin lines around his mouth. But in those last two pictures...he really looks YOUNG, doesn't he? Like, really young. And that stood out to me. It almost looks like Disney was intentionally trying to do this.

My personal theory, detailed in the latest chapter of Ghost Boy, is that Turbo corrupted his own character model when he adopted King Candy's body. But throughout the race and subsequent Cy-Bug fight scene, he started glitching more and more so that more of his original appearance came through, and at the very end he looked closer to his real self than ever. At the very bottom is my imagining of what he originally looked like before Turbo Time went kaboom and everything went to shit. I'm much happier with that design than I am with any of my previous pictures of him, so obviously I'll keep working with it until I get better.

Apologies for my shitty sketches, and also for any blurry images. Turbo is fucking hard to catch on a crappy bootleg copy of WiR, needless to say. I got some of the screenshots off of Tumblr, because they were higher quality for some reason.

I loved reading your fanfiction, and I can honestly say I love your headcanon here. I officially accept it as canon.

So I'm not the only one who likes to think of him as a child? Hey, can I adopt your head cannon? XD More serious note, it seems like a plasible theroy, in fact, it seems very likely. In fact, in a cross-over fic in my head ((that will NEVER get typed and posted, so noone better ask! Won't even get written on paper!)) Felix actually makes a comment on the fact that dispite how old his game is, he has a very young apperance. Causing Turbo to blush and throw his helmet at Felix. XD

I can see now why you think of Turbo as a kid in your fics. I know I consider him to be in his thirties, but your theory is really sweet. Nice headcanon! <3 And since I have maternal feelings for Turbo... guess that's a reason why your fanfictional world feels so sweet to my heart.

(Oh, I'm lubabe on Tumblr :3)

...what precisely was he smiling at in number five, in the movie? Because that is the goofiest, most hopeful (or possibly happily surprised?) grin.

Oh. Well, that makes sense as far as the movie goes - I can't remember him ever being cheerful when not acting as King Candy. But wow, the oddities of expressions...

So you're saying Turbo's aged appearance is connected to his King Candy form? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I mean, I know King Candy is supposed to be an old guy, but his facial wrinkles are nowhere near as pronounced as Turbo's when he's first shown. Also, I don't know if it's just the crappy screenshots, but it appears that Turbo's eyes are less sunken with each image, which is a feature King Candy also doesn't really display.

My own personal opinion here, but it's possible that details like wrinkles and sunken eyes were 100% Turbo's, but the age itself was from KC's avatar.

A lot of this definitely got proven wrong after the HD copy came out and I could get a better view at the details.

I will have to check out your fic Love the sketches, it's hard to find any stills of him. As for age, I don't know if he's a kid, but he definitely IS childish! LOL! Of course, being a game character, they never age really, so he could be quite young and would always be so. I heard they are making a Wreck-it-Ralph 2! Maybe we could be so lucky to get another Turbo injection

I don't think the last two look like children, granted he DOES look younger. Maybe late teens or early 20s. Perhaps because he was under the guise of an old man, he maintained that appearance for a moment, until most of King Candy's likeness faded away...granted he was still glitching between King Candy and Turbo. Another explanation could be that because of the glitching, he was maintaining a few of KC's physical attributes WHILE he was Turbo.

Considering some of his glitches gave him an 8-bit face, it would make sense, to me, to say that his glitching was making his appearance inconsistent.

But that's just my theory

turbomun In reply to Avi-the-Avenger [2012-12-31 00:59:16 +0000 UTC]

In my headcanon/fanfic, he's fifteen, so not technically a child unless you want to stretch that definition of that word to mean "person under eighteen." And yeah, that's sort of what I was getting at, that KC's attributes were blending with his own appearance while he was glitching. And you're right, I honestly never considered taking his 8-bit face into the mix. The one thing that keeps getting me, though, is how he appears younger and younger as the scenes go on, instead of it being completely scrambled.

Avi-the-Avenger In reply to turbomun [2012-12-31 03:44:06 +0000 UTC]

Your right, that did confuse me too when I was thinking about that. The only conclusion I can come up with is that as time goes on, even though he's still glitching, it's bringing him back to his normal face instead of mixing attributes, like it's getting used to him or something. But it's hard to say. Only the creator and animators knew what was going on I suppose lol
