Description
part of a portfolio of Hobbit concept art done back in 2006.Bert is the smartest of the three trolls (which is not saying much, but at least he's the only one who seems a little cautious of the little burra-hobbit as a potential danger)
I imagine him as a suspicious, inquisitive troll, contemptuous of Tom [link] , and not over fond of the big, dense self-proclaimed leader, Bill [link]

I really enjoyed your portraits of the 3 trolls, which are spot on. Yes, you really ought to have submitted the pictures, they are very close to the trolls that actually appeared in the first movie! And they had the requisite mixture of savage strength and villainous buffoonery that Peter Jackson wanted, too. Tolkien had a rare good time with his trolls, and (like Bilbo) he wanted to excite the kids without scaring them too much. (The scene from the FOTR movie where Bilbo is recounting that part of the tale to a wide-eyed audience of children always makes me smile.)

the trolls are one area where, modesty aside, i prefer mine to the film's which were very good, but i think they tried a little too hard to hake them all look like the trolls established in the lotr movies (with noses) and too much like eachother, i had a hard time telling them apart. I think they could have embraced the cartoonishness of the three trolls a little more and had just a little more fun with them, it always seemed an opporrtunity for some great, brief serkis/gollum style marriage of character designs and mannerisms to some great british character actors (i always pictured robbie coltrane, timothy spall and ozzy osbourne - not an actor but a well known voice and a pretty perfect dumb troll - as bill, bert, and tom, respectively)
I had alot of fun designing these guys, and always wanted to see them living their lives bfore their fatal encounter wiith the dwarves and bilbo; as you said both giant and powerful and really stupid and clumsy, I could see them bickering and pushing eachother through heavy scottish style stone moor fences, would make a fun movie all by itself.

Three actors who played Dwarves doubled up as the trolls in motion-capture antics. Mark Hadlow (Dori) played Bert, Peter Hambleton (Gloin) played Bill, and William Kirchner (Bifur) played Tom. (BTW none of these actors has any facial hair, so why the movie didn't get Oscars for makeup and costuming is beyond me. ) I always loved this scene in the story as a kid, because of the obvious fairy tale connection to the smart lad who outwits the giants/trolls and then gets their treasure. Tolkien of course knew his audience knew those stories (at least they did in the 1930s) so he dodged it by having Bilbo be incompetent in his rookie adventure. The movie gave Bilbo another chance at it, and he stalled the trolls until Gandalf could arrive. As I have tried to communicate to my MERP players before, fighting trolls head-on is a waste of time, outwitting them is safer and surer. (It didn't stop them from just wading in sometimes; they can be rather lazy sometimes. ) A film featuring the three trolls as protagonists would be black humor at best, as the hungry bandits pull a Dickens-meets-Sawney Bean routine. Given Jackson's early movies, he might be up for it!

"Hmm, jus' whut do I 'ave 'ere?"
This is great, I can almost hear the mental gears churning in ole Bert's mind.
The look on Hobbits face says he's already working on 4 different ways to trick and out maneuver this fellow, too.
Nicely done, I've been a fan of fantasy for decades and this is beautifully done. Bravo!

I like your take on the trolls and Bilbo; great pencil technique, too.
