Have you covered a plain box?

The box was not something I made, just the trinkets. Occasionally I include a box like that for loot giveaways.

Ah ok, I can normally get plain wooden boxes at a resonable price ar my local craft supplier and they need finishing in some way. I was wondering if it was the same kind of thing.

I played around with working on one and had some fun. [link]
I didn't quite have time to work on it more but when I was working on it I basically took a rubber stamp, dipped it in a glossy glue/resin and inked over it with alcohol inks. If I had continued to build on it and added a more opaque texture I could probably have gotten something along the dark richness of this box. The box i played with was more of a heavy cardboard but if you were able to get a wooden box, you might be able to woodburn a pattern or design before going over it with a simple varnish/finish. (they sell that in both paint can versions and pen versions.) I would love to see what you come up with!

That gave a really interesting effect, but if I may make a suggestion for decorating boxes, what about Decopauge it is a technique that is keeping with steam punk as it was a popular decoration technique during the Victorian period. You could print out suitable designs scaled to fit the box.

I'll have to give that a try next time I pick a blank one up. Thanks for the idea!

your welcome I hope it works out as something you can use, don't forget you would be able to finish it with varnish.

Actually one thing I really like about the whole Steampunk scene is it reminds me of a Victorian artistic movement, the Pre-Raphalites and there Arts and crafts movement.

I really like putting boxes of goodies like this together. Something like this makes an awesome birthday/holiday gift. A couple years ago fo each of my D&D players I put together a set with gold coin candy, the crystal caste dwarven metal dice and an assortment of other goodies. Heheh, I have too much fun...

That's awesome. I love putting together fun little gifts for things like Christmas and birthdays. I have fun finding unique stuff for my friends and putting it all together.

For one of my early November blog posts I'm going to list out some ideas for creating a filled steampunk stocking with all all sorts of goodies from local TX artists. Keep an eye out, I'll probably give a heads up when I post the article on this journal as well. XD Have you seen Chet Phillips' Steampunk Monkey Nation? [link] He has a set of cards he sells of his illustrations. They are a perfect stocking stuffer! XD I'm such a nerd...

Sounds cool. I'll check it out. I see all these things I wanna put in stockings, and it becomes so hard to chose. I can really spend $50 on a stocking for everyone I need to give gifts to, but I always see something and think it would be perfect for so-and-so so I add it to the list with the other 20 ideas I have for them. *sigh* At least my friends are never disappointed.
(btw-nerds are awesome)

We always have a holiday party with buddies from college and I can't wait. This year we are kind of doing a white elephant thing but we are supplying all the goodies that will be passed around. I have been collecting stuff from ThinkGeek and other places for the past couple months. x.x Heheh... so many fun goodies! XD Hehe, I think I just like giving stuff to people...
