Cons are over for me this year, but it's never too early to get started on next year's right?
(And I kinda like doing these. They're very relaxing in between commissions.) I've got Nightmare moon and Daybreaker done now, and I'm going to move on to some of the other characters. I was planning on doing the CMC next. Under no circumstances do you have permission to repost or use this image or my other work for any reason, unless specifically stated otherwise. Absolutely love this! Really dig the almost lionfish/poison dart frog style markings, giving her even more of an aura of danger.

I usually give Luna some lionfish stile spines and such, but I ramp the whole thing up to eleven on NMM. I want even the baseline version of Luna to look slightly more aggressive and threatening than her sister. I figure it might be part of the reason she was shunned in the past.

The watermark probably doesn't help. I've been putting it on because I've had art theft problems in the past, and these are specifically designed as merch. I don't want to randomly find my stuff while browsing Amazon. Again.
Most of these buttons I've been doing deliberately leave parts of the body out or cover them up, as a stylistic thing. For the characters with wings, I usually focus mainly on those. It makes it a lot easier to fit a character on one of the triangle shaped things I've got if I don't worry about the full body. Rainbow Dash doesn't have any other limbs showing at all, just the wings.
This is designed for a hexagon shape, which is easier than the triangles but is still limited. So, NMM's for-legs are visible in the center of the image, and her hind limbs are presumably behind the wings/tail. The starry mane and tail were important enough to the design that I prioritized them even more than the wings. Honestly, the for-limbs are only visible in this because I wanted the extra armor showing. I probably could have done something to make them more visible though, they kind of get lost behind everything else.
It's looked better without the watermark, I swear.

It was originally supposed to be a bat-dragon webbed frill thing. ( That was a real coherent sentence, wasn't it?) But as my head canon evolved I started adding lion-fish elements to Luna and Nightmare Moon to make them more interesting. Nightmare gets the extra bonus of having glowy bio-luminescent markings. I also gave Celestia a peacock tail.
