Description
AHAHA! HEE-HEE-HAHA!-Ripper Roo
In retrospect, slapping a straitjacket on an animal that fights mainly with its legs seems like a very poor decision and seems to stop absolutely none of Ripper Roo's motor skills. You had one job, Cortex.
Fun fact: The laugh Ripper Roo does in the classic PS1 games is an archival laugh that pops up occasionally in things, usually Disney productions. It was first recorded in Disney's Lady and the Tramp and is used in the It's A Small World Disneyland ride and the movie Elf.
I say this because this laugh is also used in one of Disneyland's firework shows, and since I work there and mainly work nights, I've heard his laugh a LOT and it's always jarring to suddenly hear the Ripper Roo laugh come out of the castle's speakers.
Kicking off 2015 pretty slowly (dear lord, it's the 14th of January and I haven't posted anything new yet?) with a Crash Bandicoot character, because I keep promising my watchers I'd draw more from this series and never actually do. Which is a shame because I love pretty much all of the character designs in that series and I've drawn maybe...two characters from it recently.
It's middle on the poll so I figured it was a good excuse. Don't worry, Zelda and Spyro fans, you will be seeing some stuff soon.
After failing to draw N. Gin (but I'm kicking around a sketch idea so maybe he'll show up this week), I decided to draw my second favorite character, Ripper Roo. Ripper Roo doesn't really do much beyond make consistent appearances in pretty much all of the PS1 games but his design is pretty amazing just from how simple yet effective it is. I just like how the scientists made a creature that can get a degree in political science very easily and has the ability to read and understand higher concepts of math and science...but they decided to stick him into the Cortex Vortex, a completely untested machine, and thus all of that knowledge is trapped in a gibbering creature that likes the soothing sounds of constant explosions.
I have drawn this guy before, but it was a long long while back and it was in his doctor persona:
I will be able never escape these pictures.
Kind of changed up his feet so they look more like kangaroo feet. Almost did it with the snout and ears but you kind of lose that Ripper Roo-ness when you get rid of the dog ears and dog mouth. He's probably like Dingodile in that he has some dog DNA in there just to make him more of a soldier of face-ripping death.
By the way, kangaroo feet are slightly terrifying. They have three toes, but their tiny toe actually has two claws and two pads, like kangaroos are always in the process of mutating and their tiny toes haven't completely fused yet.
---------
Disclaimer: Feel free to post onto other sites, but don't be that jerk and erase the signatures/claim it for your own/post it and then talk about how terrible the character is. I've seen all three of these happen and it's not cool.

Oh no, don't be sorry about finding Ripper Roo cute. I always found him to be rather adorable myself, especially in CTR when he's somehow a playable racer despite only having use of his legs.

Oh my goodness, you flatter me with your kind words. And to use it as your wallpaper too? Thank you so much! Hee hee, to hear someone is using any of my art to decorate something is such an honor.
Ripper Roo is one of my favorite Crash Bandicoot characters and I couldn't resist to spook him up a little bit, if only because he kind of spooked me a little in Crash 1. And plus an insane murderous kangaroo with razor sharp teeth is bound to look at least slightly unsettling...

Oh hi, glad you answered :3
You're welcome. I managed to terrify three people with that wallpaper of yours, lol, so there must be some truth in my compliments XD
You're welcome once again! I had too, it's really hard to find artworks of Ripper Roo, especially with such... Madness in them
"Spook him up a little bit" <--- Yeaaaah, pretty much He spooked me more in CTR, personally, because he was laughing behind me while trhowing exploding crates. Then I fell madly in love with his insanity, lol.
And yes. He'd have a really creepy cartoon series, that's for sure.

great drawing Ripper Roo is one of my favorite crash bandicoot bad guys mostly because he's wearing a straitjacket a form of clothing that you rarely see on characters also if your having trouble drawing cortex look for a character sheetΒ for help.

I think I remember you commenting on them too! I think you mentioned Ripper Roo/Coco, which is something I enjoy.

Every one of your video game-related works sends a wave of nostalgia through us! Simply fantastic!
I like how you chose the realistic route with the design. It adds not just originality, but also variety.
Ripper was one of my favorite bosses from CB2. Maybe that was because it was the first game I played when I was young, and I couldn't get past the second level because I was too young to be good at it.
Next up, Rilla Roo?

Turquoisephoenix In reply to Avimus [2015-01-20 22:55:03 +0000 UTC]
Awww, thank you! I think my specialty is drawing characters that don't really get much art, although the occasional popular thing slips its way in there.
Ripper Roo is pretty cool in CB2. I liked his little science library and his new hat and hair. Somehow he had enough time to grow a mustache between games. =B
I wouldn't really call it "realistic" considering it's still a kangaroo with sharp teeth and canine proportions in his face, but I felt like taking that away from Ripper Roo would cause him to lose his identity. Changing up his feet really do work in a positive manner and I'm really stoked that it worked that well. Kangaroos really do have fascinating feet and it seemed like a grave sin Ripper was committing by not having them.
Hmm, I think if I were to do another animal character from the Crash series and add more "cartoony realism" to them, it would probably be the Komodo Brothers, who currently just look like big green lizards who can talk. I probably won't draw Rilla Roo just because I didn't really like Crash Bash that much at all.

You should totally do the Komodo Brothers! I would be excited to see your interpretation of their character.

Then I have succeeded.
Ripper Roo didn't scare me as a kid, not when there were way scarier things in the two N64 Zelda games, but he did unnerve me. Mostly because I have to wonder just what Ripper Roo did that required his arms to be permanently restrained.

I won't pressure you to get them, but the Crash Bandicoot games are pretty solid. I like the "lore" in them and how, even though the styles would change radically and sometimes characters would change personalities, they still kept the storyline going from the PS1 days to the Wii/360 days.
Also, don't listen to the fanbase. Even the newer games have their charm. I will DEFEND Crash Tag Team Racing!
Let's face it, Rayman 2 is the stuff of nightmares. I owned both that game and Majora's Mask around the same time, but Rayman 2 caused way more nightmares and scared me way more. Majora's Mask had its freaky moments, but I'd still play those levels. Even as a kid, I'd go into Gibdo Dad's house just to do things like hit him with fire arrows just to see if he'd catch on fire or throw bombs at him just to see if he had a different hurt animation. (in retrospect I was kind of mean to him) It took me ages to get up the nerve to play Tomb of the Ancients again.
I'm in my twenties and I still refuse to play Rayman 3's Desert of the Knaaren level.

I think I will always defend Crash Tag Team Racing. Mehr Von Clutch!!!
As for Ripper having those crazy feet..ah, I wouldn't think much of it / them. Ripper was *supposedly* a kangaroo / hyena hybrid mutant. So those crazy feet add more to his insane character. *I also assume part of his name was taken from Jack the Ripper. Those claws would definitely add to that namesake.*

Turquoisephoenix In reply to Britts-Demesne [2015-02-05 08:16:11 +0000 UTC]
Crash Tag Team Racing may not be my favorite Crash game but it's pretty far up there. I used to be a big Von Clutch fan but over the years, my interests have shifted to Willy Wumpacheeks just for his voice and general mannerisms. And because of the whole ridiculousness of a talking wumpa fruit with a major chip on his shoulder.
Hmmmmm....you know, I've honestly never heard the hyena/kangaroo thing before. I've heard the dog/kangaroo theory a couple of times but never that. Ripper Roo's feet just looks like cartoony feet that you couldn't attribute to any one animal beyond "it has paws".

Britts-Demesne In reply to Turquoisephoenix [2015-02-07 09:05:43 +0000 UTC]
Willie Wumpacheeks was definitely an odd fellow; that much is for certain. But I still think that I'll always like Von Clutch.
As for Roo, don't hold my theory as gospel. I heard that from another DA artist on here.

Oh they are on my list of thigns I wanna check out eventually, I just am not that good at actually getting around to finish it :S
Right now my brother and I are busy with the Metal Gear Series and Bayonetta (luckily the later has just two games)
I was never too scared with the Rayman games, for the msot part, but this probably had to dowith the fact that I wasnt actuallyplaying :V Those games belonged to my father, and it became a habit for him to play them with us kids watching.
The Knaaren where actually a bit amusing to us, but maybe thats due to the german dub of it or something. It was scary how they could easily kill you,but you can easily ignore that if youre not playing.
The moment I picked up games for myself however, oh boy, I was pretty easy to scare. Like, a character being sorta angry at my character was sometimes enough to make me feel like something was wrong and frightening

I honestly thought Ripper was a dog in the games for a while. He never looked a kangaroo to me. XD
Great pic though. You actually made him look like a kangaroo. Nice job.

Turquoisephoenix In reply to JenL [2015-01-16 07:17:53 +0000 UTC]
In the first couple of games, I thought he was half dog, half kangaroo. There's nothing really kangaroo-like about him beyond the fact that he's bouncing up and down, his name ends in "Roo", and it's a game with Australian animals. His long tongue, face, paws, and body just read as weird deformed dog thing. And plus Ripper Roo sounded like they were doing a parody of Scooby Doo's name.
Buuut to be fair, Koala Kong barely looks like a koala, Tiny just looks like a yellow muscle-y dog instead of a Thylacine, and Komodo Joe and Moe just look like green lizards instead of big burly dragons. And of course Crash himself. Not faulting the character designs themselves because they are pretty solid fun cartoony designs that would've made an awesome cartoon series; they just don't exactly have the biggest indicators for species.
That being said, it is kind of funny that all I did was change his feet (which I kind of always had a problem with because kangaroo feet are looooong and Ripper had short stocky things) and suddenly Ripper Roo is a kangaroo.
...with sharp, carnivore teeth. Because his name's RIPPER.

JenL In reply to Turquoisephoenix [2015-01-16 07:37:17 +0000 UTC]
I believe he was named Ripper because of his long toe nails. Not really sure why though since toe nails don't tend to be that sharp. And kangaroos aren't carnivorous. They can punch and kick but you don't hear about kangaroos mauling people. Nothing about him makes any sense! Guess thats part of Ripper's shtick.
π: 0 β©: 1
Turquoisephoenix In reply to JenL [2015-01-16 10:33:36 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the whole sharp teeth on a kangaroo thing seems...odd. Insanity alters your dietary needs, I guess.
I just saw it as Cortex and Brio messing around with Ripper's DNA. Ripper Roo is one of the first mutants (if not the very first), so they probably took notes on what worked and what didn't work with Ripper and applied it to things like Dingodile's creation.
Ripper Roo as a whole doesn't really make any sense. Unlike the other mutants, you don't really get a sense that he's "evolved" beyond intellectual capacity. I'm positive that if you removed the straitjacket, you'd get kangaroo arms instead of something more human-like. Funny little kangaroo arms that can sort of manipulate things.
Ah well, at least he doesn't have a pouch. It's always weird when a cartoon gives a male kangaroo a pouch.

Hah, hah! Thank you! Yeah, they were originally "canine-ish foot that appears on every species in cartoonsβ’" until I looked up kangaroo anatomy for references and man, kangaroos are scary. Their skeletons are the stuff of nightmares.
His feet's pawpads are not completely accurate and are still dog-like, but it fit with Ripper Roo's "not-really-a-kangaroo-muzzle" face.
