As a follow up - your reference is not the best of examples - it has been post processed and the apple is not in its natural environment. That makes your work harder - for these types of studies I just prefer to make them from life - they are easy to set up, and I bet you have all you need around you - in the fridge, kitchen, garage.
My example for a life study of still life would be this: [link]

I find that the materiality of the apple is well transmitted. areas, that need to be improved are:
An apple has highly reflective surface. So you will have bounced light on the dark side of the apple. Also from a color standpoint - there would be color bleeding - intermixing of the colors in the scene - the apple would reflect to the base plane, the base plane and environment should reflect on the apple. So that said you need more reds in the environment around the base of the apple to show the connection between the object and base. And you will need cooler tones in the apple, especially on the dark side, which would suggest a reflection off the environment. Another thing I think you can improve is the feeling of depth of field, by simply gradually changing the value of the environment - from down to up and from dark to light. This would suggest depth of field or so called "aerial perspective"
As a whole I find your brushtrokes and overall form ok, so you will have even better results if you simply address the other issues.

You forgot reflective lighting at the bottom left. It just crushes to shadow.

Thats brilliant.
If its the first painting you've ever done I make one of 2 conclusions: either a) apples are ridiculously easy to paint, or b) you have a natural talent at this painting malarky (lets go for b )
It looks so damn edible, and 3d
