Description Well, here we are with yet another request pic. This request, however, comes courtesy of , who asked me to draw an insertion pic that gives him the chance to be on stage, jamming with one of his favorite Danny Phantom characters, Ember McLain. Well, I hope you enjoy the moment, my friend. Just be advised that Ember has the services of a new bodyguard these days, and he's always "skulking" in the background.

Oh, don't worry, Dude. You're in no real danger. In fact, you won't even know he's there. Just make sure you adhere to his one main rule. "Keep your hands to yourself...and you get to keep your hands, PERIOD."

Now, I can already hear some of you now..."Wait a minute. That's supposed to be Skulker? But isn't that SkulkTe...?" Well, let me cut you off right there with a quick explanation. For those of you not familiar with my Danny Phantom fanfic series, Technus became bonded to Skulker's armor after the two were simultaneously captured in a fight with Danny and Sam, and the two did end up becoming SkulkTech 9.9 (as seen in the DP ep., "The Ultimate Enemy"). Now in the end, Tucker and Valerie were ultimately able to separate Technus from Skulker's armor, but Skulker kept the upgrades. So that's basically the look he's sporting now.

, this is your request, too. You requested an Ember pic almost the exact same time did, but I'm sure you won't mind sharing it. I just hope you both like what you're seeing right now, along with everybody else.

Glad you think so. As I've shown in pretty much all my stories, Sam's ghost powers are similar to Danny's, but have evolved in some very unique ways. And as "A Family Thing" has shown, Sam getting her powers has led to a whole new development between her and Danny as well.

Well, like I said, that's not TECHNICALLY SulkTech. Skulker and Technus temporarily became SkulkTech in my Danny Phantom fanfic series. But even though Tucker and Valerie managed to separate Technus from Skulker's armor (after he tried to use it for one of his own schemes and a helpless Skulker was trapped along for the ride), Skulker kept the upgrades. So in my series, that's the way he looks now.

No problem. I did mention it in my initial description of the pic, but since my descriptions tend to get a little long-winded, I shouldn't really be surpsied if they get skipped over by most.

No, like I say, there's nothing to apologize for. I do have a tendency to ramble on in my pic descriptions, so people tend to skip over them. They didn't click one of my pics just to hear me talk, anyway.

how do u do the dp shading

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TuxedAaron In reply to Phantomfan1001 [2011-01-07 22:48:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, with the DP shading, I'm assuming you mean the way all the characters become highlighted every time there's a ghost attack. Well, when I'm drawing a pic where that's involved, it all starts with the pencil work. When I'm drawing the pic in pencil, I draw the lines to indicate where I want the shading to go. Then, once I've got it scanned and I start to add in the color, I use Photoshop's Eyedropper Tool to copy colors from still shots I have of episodes and that allows me to do the shading in the proper color. From there, I outline the shade lines in the shade color, use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill in the rest, do a little more cleanup with the brush and there you have it.

Phantomfan1001 In reply to TuxedAaron [2011-01-07 23:00:26 +0000 UTC]

I mean like when u see in the show there just like in the episode Kindred spirits when Dani says "Did I do good daddy?" then Vlad replies "You did excellent sweetheart, I could not ask for a better daughter." Then when she looks evil there is the shade color on her face.

TuxedAaron In reply to Phantomfan1001 [2011-01-08 16:32:28 +0000 UTC]

See, this is why I'm saying, don't get discouraged. First of all, you have to understand who you're in here with. There are members here who have been doing what they do for years, not to mention more than a few members here who are honest-to-God professional artists. J. Scott Campbell, Adam Hughes, Bruce Timm, just to name a few. That's quite a yardstick to measure yourself against.

Understand also, that I know exactly every bit of what you're going through. When I was your age, it drove me absolutely insane that I couldn't emulate someone else's style. I'd look at something and go "It looks so simple. WHY CAN'T I GET IT RIGHT?!" Eventually, I came up with a style of my own, using other people's approaches as influences for my own. Once I did that, it gave me the perspective I needed to start doing what I do now. But even now, it's no walk in the park for me. Without the right picture references, I'd still be lost trying emulate another's style.

So this is why I say, keep plugging away at it. Keep trying, keep practicing. And most of all, don't feel down if you don't get it right away. You're still out there, looking for the method(s) that work(s) for you. Once you find that, it'll all start to come together, believe me. But you've got to give yourself the chance to get there. Trust me, it'll be worth it when you do. And in the meantime, don't let other people's comments, or lack thereof, get you down. For what it's worth, when it comes to my fanfics, I don't have nearly the same kind of readership that some other authors on fanfiction.net enjoy, but the ones I do have are loyal. And it doesn't stop me from writing the kinds of stories I want to write.

Well, I hope this made some kind of coherent sense and didn't come off as nonsensical rambling. I'm just saying, stick with it. You're gonna get there, kid. Believe me.

At my school I have art soon, which will help me develope my skills more. And I was thinking that yesterday "Why can't I get it right?" I do enjoy art and as I said their is one drawing of Danny I did other sketchs. They're from the Fright Before Christmas.

TuxedAaron In reply to Phantomfan1001 [2011-01-09 18:06:21 +0000 UTC]

Sounds good. What kinds of subjects will your art class be covering, I wonder. Whatever it is, I'm sure it will help you gain some perspective that you can transfer to your Danny Phantom efforts. Just, like I say, don't get discouraged. I know exactly what you're feeling right now because I've been there, myself. Let's see what these art classes can do for you.

As for a tablet, well, you could always put it down on a birthday or Christmas list. I know my mother got me my tablet for Christmas two years ago and it came pretty much out of left field. But I was like, "I'LL TAKE IT!" In the meantime, though, we'll have to see what you can do about making solid lines that will scan properly.

You know, that could be something you could inquire about in your art class. If your scanner isn't very good at picking up pencil, then maybe you could still start your work in pencil, but then draw over the pencil using ink or some kind of brushing method. Your art teacher might be able to help you find a way that works right for you when your classes start.

Yeah, I know how you feel about enjoying art. The truth is, I've been drawing pretty much ever since I could pick up a pencil.

I love drawing and it is hard to catch aspects of some characters. I hope the art class will help. It's not like taking pictures will help the line thing.

I did buy ink pens though to carefully draw over the lines. And how hard is a tablet to use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TuxedAaron In reply to Phantomfan1001 [2011-01-09 18:54:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, taking pictures, especially of people, might help to determine body positions and such. As for your ink pens, those sound good. I hope you're able to do well with them.

As for a tablet, like I say, it takes some practice and getting used to. Because computers are so precise, they pick up every little twitch of your hand in ways that a pencil (or pen) and paper don't. So a very steady hand is key, which again, is something you only get through practice. I find that magnifying the image so you can carefully go over each part at a time is the best approach because it kind of gives your hand more of a wide berth to work with instead of restricting yourself to a tiny set line.

Another thing you learn very quickly with tablets is that unlike drawing with pencil and paper, where you can follow your hand as it makes the image, when you're drawing with a tablet, your eyes and your hands have to operate a little more independently of each other since you have to keep your eyes on the screen while your hand navigates the cursor through the tablet pen. But by doing it this way, you can't always see where your hand is going and make that split-second adjustment, so you won't know you're making a mistake until you've already started to make it. Again, I recommend magnifying the image to help with this problem. After all, it's a lot easier to use the undo function on one small piece of work than a larger one.

Another piece of information I would pass along is as you're working on a picture, save it, then if you have a Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, look at the picture from there and see how it's coming so far. That'll help give a little perspective as you go and you can say to yourself, "Okay, that looks pretty good. Not sure how I feel about that, though. Might want to touch that up." That kind of a thing. I know that's really helped with my work, in terms of working out finer details in my pictures.
