Description
Well, with my vacation halfway done, here we come to the first of what I hope will be a few pics while I've still got this precious time off. This pic, unless my line of request pics, is a pic for me, drawing a pic of a new obsession of mine, a French cartoon called "Zig and Sharko", which I've drawn in my Danny Phantom style (the show itself, having a bit of a DP art style going on).The basic gist of the series revolves around a mermaid named Marina, who spends a lot of her time just hanging out by this island, where a hyena named Zig lives. Day after day, Zig can think of nothing else but trying to find ways to EAT Marina. Zig's problem...Marina just happens to have a pet shark.
I caught this show on Netflix recently. Not being a big fan of French cartoons, my first reaction was naturally to just pass it by. But eventually, my curiosity shouted down my better judgement and I gave it a look. And for some reason, I was HOOKED. And even now, I still don't know why. I mean, on its face, the concept just SHOULDN'T work. But the presentation just hits all the right notes.
Essentially, the series takes a lot of cues from classic silent cartoon shorts of the day (even the classic Warner Bros. and Disney shorts). There is no dialogue in this series. Any time someone does speak, it's either through sound effects or nonsensical babbling. Which is probably one of the things that makes this series work as well as it does. Since the point of the show is simply to watch the wacky events as they unfold, trying to accompany it with witty dialogue would only get in the way.
It's amazing how this series can keep coming up with ways for Sharko to pummel Zig and still make it seem fresh every time (few things are more amusing that watching Zig smash into something and then just blurt out, "EEK!"). But truly, the glue that holds this series together has GOT to be Marina, who is fascinating as this instantly likable character that can turn the world on with her smile, yet whose brief moments of sadness can just as easily break your heart. She is also infinitely complex, yet gloriously simple. When we're first introduced to her, she really doesn't appear to be all that bright (although, since this is predominantly a silent cartoon, it's not as if we need her quoting Aristotle or Nitsche, here). But over time, you quickly discover that she does, indeed, have a brain in her head. She just doesn't go out of her way to turn it on unless she HAS to.
And then we come to Bernie, the Hermit Crab, who is definitely the odd man out of this bunch. On the surface, Bernie is Zig's best friend and often serves as his sidekick in his efforts to put Marina on his dinner table. But behind the big baby eyes and impish squeaks lurks the mind of a genius, who will often be seen indulging in his own little side projects whenever he can manage to tear himself away from Zig. Of course, not all of his projects turn out the way he'd prefer, either.
Well, that's the basic gist of the show. If you can, I definitely recommend you check it out. At roughly seven minutes per short, it doesn't take much out of your day. And besides Netflix (as well as certain Nickelodeon and Disney Channel stations), you can also catch several of the shorts on Youtube. Like I say, don't judge this series by its concept. It's the presentation that make this work. In the meantime, though, I hope you enjoy this pic and know that I'm planning to have some more new stuff very soon.

Well, I drew the pic in Hartman style, that's true. If you've seen the show, the first Season, I think is arguably the best, in terms of animation and design quality. It has kind of a "faux-anime" style going on. When the show gets to Season 2, however, the animation quality kind of takes a hit, because it seems more like they're going for a "faux-Cartoon Network" style.

If Zig can pull food out to distract animals at any given time, why doesn't he just eat that if he's so hungry? Instead of trying to eat Marina

Well, that's kind of the point, isn't it? Zig can clearly capture other animals and eat them, so why is he so obsessed over this mermaid? The show never really explains it.
Season 2 actually gets into this thing that Zig has been obsessed with eating Marina for a long time. In fact, he and Sharko were actually childhood friends until Marina came into the picture. But once they met her, Sharko saw hearts and Zig saw a sandwich.
I'm not really sure what the point of showing that development was. I suppose it was someone's idea of trying to insert some character depth into the show. But it still doesn't explain where Zig's hangup of wanting to eat Marina actually came from.

I like the show
sometimes, and especially in the evil panda episode, it feels like Zig views her a friend if not a sister figure, but hunger makes him desperate just like how he tried to eat Bernie in that one episode. Plus in mermaid fritter, without Marina he grew depressed.

I like the show, too. Though I have to say, I prefer the designs and animation from Season 1, where it had more of a "faux"-anime style, as opposed to Season 2, which is more of a "faux"-Cartoon Network style.
Well, the thing about Season 2 is that we get a little more background, in that they've all known each other since they were little. So in essence, they are TECHNICALLY friends. Although Zig's whole desperation argument is a bit hollow when you consider that there are any number of other animals on the island that he could capture FAR more easily than Marina. We've seen it more than once. So he's really got no reason to complain about an empty belly. The only reason he's so dead set on Marina is quite simply because, if he wasn't, there wouldn't really be any series to speak of

Granted, Season 2 gave us Marina's cute little chipmunk face whenever she eats candy, but that hardly makes up for the decline in quality.
We do occasionally get glimpses into the characters' backgrounds, though. However, it would be more accurate to refer to the recent introduction of this new merman as Marina's grandfather on her mother's side, since we already know from Season 1 that her father was human.

Oh, I HIGHLY recommend it. I think the designs and animation had better quality in Season 1 than they do in Season 2 (particularly Marina, who seems to have gone from a "faux anime" style to a "faux Cartoon Network" style). But the humor is still there. And since each episode is only a few minutes long, you can watch one or two here and there and not miss a beat.
I'll show you a couple of videos from each Season, just you give you an overall assessment (as well as to show you the visual differences I was talking about)...

Holy crap! I love the animation in season 1! Was season 1 by any chance hand drawn, traditional animation? Because it's very beautiful! It really does have that Ren and Stimpy vibe, which I love! I kind of wish they kept the animation the same in season 2. Oh well...

TuxedAaron In reply to TheRandomGirlXD [2018-01-04 16:28:09 +0000 UTC]
Well, I'm assuming both Seasons were hand-drawn. But yes, Season 1's design and animation were definitely superior. And while I do think Marina's "chipmunk face" whenever she eats candy is just cute as the dickens, visually, Season 2 is still very much a step backward, in a lot of ways.
Glad you like what you saw, though. ^_^

Cool. Season 1 had a couple of deep moments as well, such as one particular scene when Marina actually finds out who her parents are (Season 2 introduces her grandfather, so we're assuming he's the one who raised her).
Season 2's still pretty funny, though. ^_^

Oh wow, that's cool to add in a fun cartoon.
Well, it is still funny, but the art style definitely changed. And I'm not a fan of the current style.

Well, the way the scene works is that Marina actually has a near-death experience where she meets her mother and father. Apparently, her father was a human who was stranded on the island, years ago and fell in love with her mother. And then, of course, we have Marina's grandfather, on her mother's side, who was introduced in Season2.
No, I don't care for it, either. Again, the show is still funny, but it doesn't look as good as it used to.

Well, like I said in the Pic Description, don't let the concept fool you. It really IS all in the presentation.
And yes, Marina IS hot...and is also very nice. And she really IS the glue that holds this series together.
If you don't have Netflix, you CAN watch the entire series on Youtube. And I highly recommend you check out at least a few of these episodes. I do think the production quality took a bit of a hit in the second Season, especially regarding Marina (the first Season animated her in sort of a "faux-anime" style, whereas the second Season seems to be animating her in a more "faux-Cartoon Network" style). But it's still hilarious. ^_^

I honestly don't understand why DeviantArt likes Marina.
How the hell Marina is "instantly likable"? She's an incredibly naive bimbo who, even after showing at some points that she knows Zig is going to eat her, still plays with fire. She mangles animals into accessories for her. She is practically the center of a cult, and Sharko is pretty much her only protection from Zig and King Neptune. Despite this, she CHEATS on Sharko at some points. She is a self-centered airhead. I honestly thought, at some point, that DeviantArt loved her for her boobs. Sorry.
Given that you think that Marina is instantly likable, I assume you never watched Hair Story or Sharko and His Folks, episodes that made me instantly despise her as a character, along with Sharko.
Besides, it's Zig and Bernie who are the glue of the show. They are the ones who hunt Marina - without them the show would end.
End of rant.

Well...it's a cartoon. As such, it's pretty inconsistent about a lot of things. One of those things being Sharko and Marina's relationship. I mean, for several episodes until a romance was suggested, I was operating under the impression that Sharko was Marina's pet.
But while she's not too bright and does have her self-centered moments, I daresay she tries to be nice for the most part. But that's just me.
I wouldn't say Bernie Hunts Marina, though. He rarely has anything to do with Zig's antics on that front...except to maybe get him out of a mess he's gotten himself into.

To me, Zig and Bernie were actually better characters than Sharko and Marina, who I considered - and still consider - designated heroes.
Also, have you seen Sharko and His Folks? The ending would be romantic, had it not been for Zig and Bernie receiving abuse for nothing... aside from a walrus being skinned, of course.
Also, to me, Zig and Bernie's relationship was far more intense. Heh!

TuxedAaron In reply to InfernoMole [2016-06-23 00:49:04 +0000 UTC]
Well, basically, I just like hearing Zig shout "Eek!" whenever he gets hurt. Besides, I would hardly call Zig or Bernie heroes in one particular respect. Because with all the other animals on the island that Zig could capture and eat, why is he obsessing over this mermaid? I mean, you saw it in the very first episode, where he's filling like, two dozen fish with helium, so he could use them like balloons to float over Sharko and get to Marina. It's like, "Why don't you just eat the damn FISH?! You ALREADY caught them."
I saw that episode. Wasn't one of my favorites, so it kind of went in one ear and out the other for me. As for the Walrus, well...he's ALWAYS skinning the poor walruses. They REALLY need to stop letting him do that.
Intense...you mean except for the times Zig's tried to eat him out of sheer desperation, right?

InfernoMole In reply to TuxedAaron [2016-06-23 11:42:35 +0000 UTC]
Well, Marina and Sharko are hardly heroes either. While I have already ranted about Marina, Sharko is a sadist who uses his raw strength to get his way, and yet a spineless weakling who couldn't even tell his parents about his girlfriend. Also, I prefer "cats" over "mice", and you can probably guess who is my favorite character.
Also, I ship Zig and Bernie. So there's that.

Probably because mermaids are a nice delicacy. Also, I'd rather see Zig kill Sharko and munch on Marina's dead remains, so there's that.
