Description
"...I'm an UPGRADE."One of the lines I plan to have Hobgoblin say to Norman Osborn during their first encounter in my fanfics...assuming I can get them going.
The long-awaited followup to my pic, , this pic is intended to reveal the ACTUAL design of Hobgoblin that I came up with and to show everyone just a little bit more of what I have in store for my Spectacular Spider-Man fanfics, in the hope of attracting potential co-writers to the cause. As I've said in my earlier pics, because I've got so many stories in this series to write, there's simply no way I could POSSIBLY do it on my own. So I've taken it upon myself to draw some pics of some of the broader concepts I have in mind, in the hopes that it might draw interest from other fanfic writers to help me.
Hobgoblin was definitely one of the first pics I wanted to get out there, because I plan for him to play a BIG role in these stories. But of course, the obvious issue was, how was I supposed to draw a Hobgoblin pic if I don't know what Hobgoblin was going to LOOK like? So that's when I started thinking about putting a proper design together.
The head turned out to be the easiest part. Just like with the comics, I simply took the original Green Goblin face, gave it less exaggerated features, demonic red eyes and voila. It was maybe two minutes of work and I was just like, "There. That's it. THAT'S my Hobgoblin". But THEN, I had to start designing the actual COSTUME and THAT'S when I ran into problems.
Most of the issues stemmed from the fact that I was getting too focused on "classic" Hobgoblin and those elements I wanted to have from the comics. I even wanted the curled-up, pointy shoes. But as I went back and looked over the SSM Green Goblin design, I realized just how many things were radically different. For one thing, he wasn't wearing the pointy elf hat, but more like a flight cap without the goggles. And he didn't have a tunic over his chest, either, it looked more like chest armor. And then, there was the jack-o-lantern belt buckle and the loincloth and the big, honkin' space booties. And I was just like, "Uuuh-hhhh...how do I make THIS work?
That was when I realized I had to take a step back and look at the whole concept objectively. And when I was at work that night, I started thinking about Roderick Kingsley's mindset in the comics when he started knocking around the idea of becoming the Hobgoblin. While he liked the whole Goblin concept in general, which is why he kept the basic elements intact, the one thing he knew he DIDN'T want to be was another GREEN Goblin. Because as far as Kingsley was concerned, Norman Osborn was a clown and he LOOKED like one. And Kingsley decided right out of the gate that if he was gonna DO this thing, he didn't want to look like a clown. He wanted to look like a BADASS.
So that's what got me thinking, how do I take all the elements that made the Green Goblin look GOOFY and turn them around to make the Hobgoblin look DANGEROUS? And that was when all these ideas started flooding into my head, which I just HAD to get on paper the next morning. I took the jack-o-lantern belt buckle and turned it into a skull, ripped up the loincloth and the cape, threw in some chains and leather straps and even added spikes on the boots...which, if you notice, actually allowed me to give Hobgoblin the curly boots I wanted without ACTUALLY making them. And as for the glider, I went and added horns. Basically, the whole idea was to make him look like some demon who had just escaped from Hell, and despite the cartoonish look of the SSM character designs, I think I pulled it off quite nicely.
All-in-all, I'm quite happy with this pic and hopefully, this will be a good step forward as I move forward from here to get my drawing back on track. I know more than a few of you have been worried about me. In any event, feel free to tell me what you think of this pic once you see it. Looking forward to hearing from all of you. ^_^

Well, I HAVE answered this question before, but I certainly don't mind doing it again. ^_^
Like SSM did for Green Goblin, I WOULD like to go the "two voice actors" route, (one voice for Kingsley, another for Hobby). But like with my Hobgoblin design, I'd like his voice to get away from the goofy obnoxiousness of Steve Blum's Green Goblin and go with someone who could play the role straight and in a more badass way. To that end, if it was me, I would actually line up David Caruso to voice SSM Hobgoblin. If you ever saw him in CSI: Miami, you'd understand. His dry, gravelly voice would be perfect for channeling that air of menace to the character. It would also be all the more perfect to disguise Hobgoblin's identity, since Caruso's white and in SSM, Roderick Kingsley is actually a black man.

Well, by the time Hobgoblin and Norman have their face off, Harry will be incarcerated in Ravencroft. When Hobgoblin exposes that the "ghost" of Norman that Harry kept seeing (and what ultimately drove him to put on the Green Goblin suit in the first place) was just a deception Norman had been feeding him, Spider-Man publicly calls Norman out...a challenge which Norman's narcissism won't allow him to refuse. So he returns to New York, with intentions to take out both Spider-Man AND Hobgoblin.

That works. Just saying, the Osborns need to be taught a lesson in their own ways ;;

so does Harry though, that's the thing ;; Harry had done some crap to Peter out of spite, he needs to learn how to not do that thing ;;

Well, the Gwen thing is going to fizzle out pretty quickly (it won't be long before her frustration outweighs her guilt). So he's not going to get much mileage out of that. And of course, Norman's eventual manipulations aren't going to help. So he really doesn't need anyone to get back at him as he's pretty much going to self-destruct on his own, anyway.

Gotcha Though I can kinda see someone besides Peter calling Harry out for his BS though ;; MOSTLY because while Peter has a bit of a pity party going on, someone is gonna notice. ;;
THough had another slight idea...with Liz ;; SAY...something along the lines of her becoming...this heroine:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firestar (Basically a nod to the Ultimate Version )

TuxedAaron In reply to Shadow-DJ [2016-10-13 16:21:52 +0000 UTC]
Well, the thing is, I can't see anyone close enough to do that except maybe MJ. I know I've kind of got her indirectly making peace with Liz on Peter's behalf.
"Listen, If I thought it would have made a difference, I'd have fought for him," she remarks to Liz, leaning in with a confident smirk. "And believe me...I would have WON, too..."
"...But we both know it would have been a waste of time."
As for your other idea, I don't know. Wasn't her brother becoming Molten Man kind of a nod to Ultimate Firestar? I suppose it could still be done. The only question is, what to do with her after that.

Shadow-DJ In reply to TuxedAaron [2016-10-13 16:26:52 +0000 UTC]
Not really. Molten Man was ALWAYS Liz's brother (Stepbrother in the comics). And I was thnking hat doing that wuold introduce the X-Men into the Spectacular verse ;; At least the Wolverine and the X-Men versions anywya (Since they fit the best with SPectacular AND EMH)
...actually, maybe you could start the story after the SPidey team up and efore the Reserve Avengers thing with Galactus? ;; Basically Spidey is feeling a tad better after the whole Osborn thing after teaming up with Captain america (one of his idols) and the story starts with him wanting to fix his life that Norman messed up

So...what? The plan is just to ship Liz off to Westchester and get her out of the way?
Start what story? Or do you mean the whole SSM series, itself?

It's not out f the way ;; I think they would be interested in her joining, but I do see her declining out of her own personal reasons as she oesn't wan to leave everything, whichI Think they can understand. Heck, maybe they let BObby stay to train her Thus them having team ups with Spidey Every now and again ; (As asort of nod to the Amazing Friends series). And again, I am more talking about the Wolverine and the X-Men series ;; Theyre the one with the crossover with EMH ;;
The SSM thing ;; Basically have it start AFTER the Spiderman episode of EMH since they were originally planning on it being connected to the Specactular Spiderman verse ;;

Gotcha ;; Was just saying it'd be after the EMH stuff ;;(it's going with the idea that Josh Keaton was gonna voice Spidey in EMH before Drake Bell overdubbed him)

And what kind of build-up would that be?
I understand. But again, trying to shoehorn the Avengers in (even as just a reference), without much of an idea to go on, might be a little tough.

I don't know. No disrespect to Charlie Adler, but if he did the voice, it would make him sound goofy and obnoxious, like Steve Blum's Green Goblin was. Nice job, Aaron. I think I can see how this one gave you a difficult time to do. I have to say, my favorite has to be the unique design you gave his glider. The gargoyle face (a shout out to one of your other favorite shows that the director of SSM conveniently did?) is pretty creepy looking. I don't know if you've already answered this, but have you decided on how his voice would sound and the kind of taunts he'd make? I mean, if he's suppose to be an improvement over Greenie, he'll need his own brand of tormenting sayings.

TuxedAaron In reply to BivGalPanAndRaa [2016-06-07 12:25:42 +0000 UTC]
Well, despite the simplicity, there were still a lot of moving parts to this pic...a lot of individual bells and whistles that needed to be colored and shaded. As for the glider, well, it's basically the same design as the glider Norman used as Greenie. I just popped some horns on the top.
As for Hobgoblin's voice, well, I HAVE answered this question before, but it's okay if I do it again. Like SSM did for Green Goblin, I WOULD like to go the "two voice actors" route, (one voice for Kingsley, another for Hobby). But like with my Hobgoblin design, I'd like his voice to get away from the goofy obnoxiousness of Steve Blum's Green Goblin and go with someone who could play the role in a more badass way. It would also be all the more perfect to disguise Hobgoblin's identity, since Caruso's white and in SSM, Roderick Kingsley is actually a black man.
As for taunts, I don't really have anything lined up, outside of a line or two for specific scenes in stories.

I don't think he's gonna have to do anything to his voice. The idea is, he would be carrying himself with the same cockiness as Norman. He'd just be playing it straight, without Osborns' obnoxious goofball antics. Let me give you a few tidbits of lines I'd like to have him say. This one is during the scene where he's blackmailing Miles Warren to perfect the Globulin Green for him. Now, Warren already has the gears turning in his head about how he can use this to incapacitate (or possibly kill) Hobgoblin, in order to get out from under his thumb. But Hobgoblin demonstrates that he's already one step ahead of that play by revealing to Warren that the information he's collected on him operates on a 24-hour timer. If he isn't around to reset the timer every day, the information will be released.
"See, you hold no surprises for me, Professor. I've known men like you my entire life," Hobgoblin remarks with a smirk as he stares down Warren, who's now begun sweating bullets. "Oh, you're all smiles and confidence when you know the advantage is yours. But when things are otherwise..."
"...Well...that's when you crumble faster than the dirt beneath your feet as you fall to your knees and utter those four...simple little words..."
"...please...don't...hurt...me."
This next set of lines comes during the initial confrontation between Hobgoblin and a returning Norman Osborn. As their initial face-off devolves into an all-out brawl, two two of them end up having a dogfight on gliders, inside one of Norman's old Goblin dockside hideouts that Kingsley has claimed as his own. But while Norman isn't showing any signs of rust, having been away for so long, Hobgoblin throws him off his game by revealing that he has all of Norman's strengths, but none of his weaknesses. Particularly the one which cripples him most...
...Spider-Man.
"You see, Norman, I don't share your obsession with the wallcrawler," Hobgoblin remarks, "OR your FEAR of him."
"Norman Osborn fears NOTHING!" Norman shouts back.
"Oh, really?" Hobgoblin continues to taunt. "Then tell me, what DO you call it when someone runs off to the other side of the world and hides behind CHILDREN to fight his battles for him?"
This is the part where Norman totally loses it and Hobgoblin seizes the opening. Destroying Norman's glider, Hobgoblin flies in, grabbing Norman by the scruff of the neck and crashing him through the ceiling of the Goblin lair. Dragging Norman with him, Hobgoblin buzzes through the skies before finally chucking Norman to the edge of a nearby dock.
Norman manages to find enough presence of mind to avoid falling into the water. However, still in a daze, he's barely managing to pull himself up from the edge. And that's when he sees Hobgoblin hovering overtop of him. With Norman a sitting duck, Hobgoblin could easily finish him off at that moment. But instead, satisfied that his point has been made, Hobgoblin merely chuckles.
"This has been an amusing little diversion, Norman, but my joviality has its limits," Hobgoblin states in triumph. "However, never let it be said that I'm not generous."
"You have one day, Norman. Leave now, and I'll be more than happy to forget that this whole...silly little incident ever occurred," Hobgoblin continues, his smirk giving way to a look of menace. "However...should you REFUSE my generous offer...I promise...
...You WILL regret your mistake."
And with that, Hobgoblin flies off with a laugh, leaving Norman to wallow in his anger and humiliation.
I think that would all sound pretty good coming out of Caruso's voice. ^_^
