Day 7 - Favourite Bird
Pithecophaga jefferyi, the Philippine Eagle. This is one of the largest species of eagle in the world, and also one of, if not the most magnificent. Their wings are relativley short but extremley broad, which allows them to manouver at high speeds through the jungle canopy in pursuit of their preferred prey; monkeys.
This species is the national bird of the Philippines, where its local name is "Haribon", meaning "King of Birds".
Philippine Eagles are a protected species, and killing one is punishable by up to 12 years in prison. Sadly, they are still considered critically endangered, the main cause being loss of habitat due to deforestation in their home range.
