Description Aww...
I would have drawn a Christine to complete the set, but I don't like her for one. For two, just looking at her hair and her big puffy dresses...It's not worth the trouble.
I actually printed Erik (Phantom) on one side and Raoul on the other and ta-da...new bookmark.

So, yeah I am like sooooo obsessed with The Phantom of the Opera right now. Such a good story. I love Erik and Raoul is just sho cute.

I don't rant often (I don't think) but here comes a rant about Raoul.
The Raoul Rant:

I just don't understand why so many people hate him. I can't go anywhere without seeing people take part in 'Raoul-bashing.' It doesn't make any sense. Usually when characters get bashed they're stupid or annoyingly evil.

Raoul has done nothing wrong!! He is an all around good, awesome character. Why don't people like him?

Is it because he ruined the ending for the book/movie? Okay, let's examine this closely. Raoul went to save Christine from the antagonist (correct me if I'm wrong, but in most plots this is a good thing) and got captured. Christine made the choice between which one she wanted!! If you want to blame someone for the Phantom not having a happy ending blame her. Better yet, isn't Erik to blame for his own unhappy ending? He let them go!!

There is nothing wrong with Raoul. He is an awesome, lovable character. And Patrick Wilson, who plays him in the 2004 movie, is nothing short of adorable!! And he has the most addictive sweet smile.

And the whole 'Fop' thing isn't funny anymore. You want to keep calling Raoul a Fop? Fine!! I can't stop you. But, let's look closely at the word.

fop - a man who is excessively vain and concerned about his dress, appearance, and manners.
(As provided by Dictionary.com.)

Now, if you want to call Raoul a Fop under this definition it wouldn't be too very far from the truth. (Giving the aristocrat that he is.) But, think about it...doesn't that mean that Erik is also a Fop? I mean look at him. Is he not obsessed with his appearance? Does he not always dress to his finest? Are his manners not extravagant? I rest my case.

Okay...now I stop.

EDIT: 07/19/2009 I'm sorry, but I'm disabling comments. I'm simply tired of people continuously trying to argue that Raoul is not a good person. Or that he is some prissy princess who "stole" Chrstine. Even though if you took one second to read what I typed above, pure logic would beat that claim down. Think, people. Saying anything akin to the opposite is the sinking ship of a defense. (fyi: I write off anyone who says as much an idiot on the spot. It lets me know you probably just watched The Phantom of the Opera through a couple of times and think you know it sooo well.) I no longer want to have the same discussions over and over and over. I keep giving the same facts again and again and winning little debates with common sense and a nice insight into the plot.
Yes, I have read the book, seen the 1925 movie, and the 2004 musical. I have also written two separate papers (one of which was more than twelve pages long and involved many weeks of research) on all of these and more Phantom of the Opera versions. Don't try and challenge me because you've read the book and think you have something over me. You cannot tell me anything I do not know. Erik is pitiful. I love him as much as I love Raoul. But!! He is still the antagonist. That isn't going to change. Raoul is the hero. And if you feel like fighting me on this simply to be difficult, I'm going to give you some un-debatable definitions straight from dictionary.com as they are relevant. Okay?
Protagonist: the leading character, hero, or heroine of a drama or other literary work. (In the book, which started it all, Raoul is portrayed as the main character as the book is told from his perspective. This and the fact that we simply know the protagonist as the hero must make us claim Raoul as it because he tries-- to the point he brushes death-- to save Christine and put an end to the Phantom which haunts them all.)
Antagonist: a person who is opposed to, struggles against, or competes with another; opponent. The adversary of the hero or protagonist of a drama or other literary work. (This simple definition should be enough, but no. Laying it right out there for you too blind to see: Erik terrorized the Opera House from the shadows. He kidnapped Christine and sent the whole plot spiraling downward into a dark mess that would have otherwise been a happy story of love between two childhood friends.)
I'd say debate the highlighted truths, but I typed them for the sheer fact that I'm sick of that.
Erik is the antagonist. Raoul is the protagonist. And Christine is a bland character who WILLINGLY chose the Vicomte over the Phantom. STOP blaming things on Raoul. Bashing him is a practice whose stupidity is on par with jumping out of a plane without a parachute.

Oh, lucky. When it came to my area, I didn't have money at the time. Sad day.

Thanks. And good luck with your picture.

So cute! I love it!
Its finally a relief to meet someone else thinks Raoul is a good character. My brother absolutely hates Raoul, he won't say anything when we watch the movie but I can see the glare. I've seen the theater adaption and I've been hooked. I'm reading the book right now and its adding to my "little obsession " with this story.

Hehe. Thanks.
Yes, it's always nice to find to find another Raoul lover. Anyone who hates him probably can't defend the claim with any actual reason. Now, Christine on the other hand, aka: everyone's beloved little angel.....

Hahaha. I'd like to see it in the theater one day, but I'm content with the movie and book right now. I hope you enjoy it. It's a really good read.

OMG THATS FAWKING ADORABLE lol, um well I have to say, I used to be a Raoul hater, but after roleplaying with someone that rps his character quite well, I love him now XD hahaha anywho, I see Erik as ONE SEXY BAD BOY lmao XD and Raoul he's the sweet, yet cute good boy, that's the only reason I love Erik more, he's sexy X] haha but yeah I still have room to love Raoul too. However if I'd been Christine I would've had trouble choosing because all in all they both loved her. Truthfully, can you blame Erik for the way he acts? I mean think about it, people have always hated him or have been afraid of him his whole life instead of loving him so he doesn't know how to act around people y'know? So I don't see why people say Erik's a bad person because really he's NOT he's just not sure how to handle emotional things well or how to handle people well is all

Twilight-Deviant In reply to Ithelda [2008-07-09 07:42:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.
I don't believe that I've ever liked Christine. I find her undeserving of the selfless love that is given her. What's worse is that there are two people who feel that way towards her.

Erik's eyes in the book were yellow (I think...it's been a while since I read it) but Gerard Butler's are green, so I felt it much better to go with that. :3

Yeah. I know he should have yellow eyes technically, but I think green are pretty ^_^ Yes, I think Christine just couldn't handle the immensity of Erik's love for her. *shakes head sadly*

That is adorable.

I really don't have anything against Raoul, but I understand the bashing. Come on, Erik life sucks hard core. He was born deformed, was a slave in a gypsy circus, lives without much human contact. Quite frankly, Raoul can be seen as a pansy in comparision by some people.

Like a said, I have nothing against Raoul, I just feel for the monster figure.

I just watched the movie and I luv it very much! maybe it's bcoz of the awesome songs especially the The Phantom Of The Opera song one~ So dark n rock and... aahh~ and also Gerard's Phantom... (haha I didn't know Gerard but he's made a hot Phantom )

Speaking of Raoul and Erik, I didn't hate Raoul nor like him. I don't have any problem with him. I'm more attracted to Erik bcoz maybe I prefer a mysterious, dark, arrogant-looking type of men and also like black hair and light eyes (bcoz that made man soo dark n mystery although Erik is only wearing black wig hehehe)

and I didn't mind either if Erik didn't get Christine at the end. But maybe it is bcoz Erik is the protagonist (the most main and focused character) of the story, so I guess that's why some people hate or dislike Raoul who become the antagonist (the character who opposed the main character/protagonist). But I'm not sure tho what happen if The Phantom is not the protagonist but becomes the antagonist (the villain) instead, lolz

but it's too sad looking at Erik at the end when he cried.. awww I really wanna hug him~ T_T (and geez, Gerard made The Phantom too hot (in my opinion).. I know the original Phantom isn't supposed to be hot and sexy but haha, I guess I'll stick with Gerard's Phantom. )

yeah that's my opinion on the movie (yep the 2004 one only hehe..) I didn't know the real and original story (the novel) but for the movie, I guess Meg is ok too to be paired with Erik since he knew her mom since he was a kid so I bet he do know Meg too when she was born... hehe

anyway, these chibis are cute! ahhhh I still wanna hug gerard's phantom~
forgive my poor grammar btw

Best Raoul-rant ever. I love Raoul, and I think that he was the better choice for Christine, for he is a sweet man who would never take advantage of her stupidity. Erik, on the other hand, is a crazy mo-fo who needs to get himself in line before he can even think of loving someone else.

Cute picture, by the way. Loves of people draw chibi Phantoms and Raouls, but these are sublime.

Instant fav! The phantom looks amazing as a chibi, and Raoul's face is so adorable! Now about hating Raoul....I don't hate him either, after all, it was Christine who decided to have two loves...she caused the whole darn thing! T-T Now, i personally don't think Raoul is a bad guy, even though sometimes i use the word "fop" when talking about him, but that's usually when i do sarcastic comics and such...but in all seriousness (which i hardly find myself dispalying ^3^ when it all comes down to it..You gotta love the little guy!

AngelorDemon In reply to ??? [2007-04-21 03:18:54 +0000 UTC]

I love this! But why people bash Raoul is simply this: They, myself included, see that Raoul got in the way of a passionate love. It seems that he also acts slightly childish at times. Erik, on the not of Fop, can be called that, but he learned how to act the way he was from different parts of the country and by watching the plays going on. His dress? Clothes taken from the closet of the Opera house that he likes better than what he used to where, which was rags. His stuff? Also stolen. I've read the book and I have come to adore the Phantom and think that Christine and Erik would have been the better couple. Raoul, on the other hand in the book, was a wimp! Point blank. Period. Read it if you do not believe me. He cries ever other chapter... but Erik does too but that is only in the end. Raoul cries more... and he goes crazy after only a few minutes of being with the mirrors.

Read if you do not believe. It's a good book, it's a good movie but Phantom just rocks 100% and Raoul... he can just go with Meg. You can debate with me if you want. Just message me and I'll be happy to have one about Erik!

Twilight-Deviant In reply to AngelorDemon [2007-04-21 15:50:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I have read the book. (Wonderful book. Beautifully written.) Yes, I read about him crying. I still think that Raoul is a good character though, possibly only in my opinion, seeing as he has done nothing wrong short of crying. And, yes he couldn't take the torture chamber very long, but our only basis for comparison was the Persian. And, we know that not only had he seen it before, but that he is much better trained mentally. Not to mention that he is somewhat used to such a harsh warm climate as it is similar to his place of origin. Gaston Leroux also said that the only reason that Raoul was already thrust into such a hectic state was that he was also worried for Christine.

I can't exactly see Raoul being called a coward either. Sure, he cries, but the fact that he risked his life by following a complete stranger five cellars under the earth to rescue the woman he loved from a madman and supposed killer isn't exactly cowardly.

As much as I would love to at least try and support Erik/Christine from watching the movie, I can't because I have also read the book. I know that Andrew Lloyd Webber changed the plot around to give more sympathy to the Phantom (which I personally don't think that he needed). Because in the book, Christine is scared to death of the Phantom. There is no love there. I mean, she tried to kill herself when he kidnapped her. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not exactly a hardcore Raoul/Christine fan either, I don't support one pair over the other. I'm simply a Raoul fan. I'm also an Erik fan, I love the guy.

It cannot be denied though that Erik longs to be admired by the upper levels of society and that he wants to fit in perfectly. Raoul is no more guilty of fine dress and manners than Erik. For, is it not a man of similar standing to Raoul that Erik longs to become.

I would like to thank you for the compliment on my drawing and your challenge of debate.
