The Aurora Borealis Dragon! The next part of the '2011 Planetary Dragon Series!' <3
Auroras are so perrty. :3
So I focused here on the Aurora Borealis - the 'Northern Lights' seen in the Northern Hemisphere - rather than the Aurora Australis, the 'Southern Lights' seen in the Southern Hemisphere. (They're, like, the same thing, only upside-down from each other. XD )
Yes, I am on the East Coast, USA, and I have seen the Aurora Borealis from my window on several occassions. Do you realize how big of the lights, that has to be? 'Cause I'm not exactly North. Anyways.
Named after the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, the Polar Lights (as they're also called) are natural displays of light and colour caused by charged particles in the Earth's magnetic field. By observing the different colours in the lights, scientists can tell what elements are prevalent in what parts of the atmosphere at different times. ^^ (I've seen green and red ones.)
As gorgeous and innocuous as they seem, the lights are actually the results of intense solar storms that erupt from the surface of the sun. The gases on the surface of the sun build up in random areas sometimes, and then release enormous solar flares - solar winds - that race at light speed out into the solar system, and sometimes right into Earth. Alhamdulillah, we're lucky enough to have this great magnetic field that does a pretty stellar (lol, space jokes) job at keeping them away from our atmosphere, which would be incinerated should the superheated winds and particles come in contact with it.
However, sometimes a solar flare is just that big and blows its way against and through the magnetic field, busting in and dealing some damage - this is usually in the form of, like, knocked-out satellites, power outages, grid blips, etc. It can get pretty intense.
So next time you see the Aurora, it is safest to admire from a distance. ;D
I've always admired the Auroras - they're one of the most gorgeous displays of the universe that we can readily see - like rainbows and iridescence at night. BUT, the things that have really captivated me are the images of them taken from space - GORGEOUS AND AWESOME. Like...huge, gleaming shafts of light cascading down to earth...subhanallah.
So I tried to capture it here with my light dragon. ^^ (And if you look closely, you'll see a couple familiar faces in the background. X) ) And you can even see the lights from the towns on earth below him!

Yer welcome. Oh, one more thing, think you could do the Moon dragons for Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune?
