Well, I think the name "Fluttershy" itself is derived from "butterfly".. hahahah..! Fluttershy does have butterflies as cutiemark..! So, why moth..?

Her name comes from the term "shutterfly", which is because the G3 Fluttershy was a social butterfly that used to be a photographer (pretty much like Photo Finish except with less MAGICKS).

Yeah, when G4 came around and Faust found Hasbro couldn't use the original G1 characters like she wanted (only Applejack got saved because her name was shared with a G3 pony), she turned some G3s into the counterparts of her intended G1 charas. Thus Fluttershy is actually a version of an earth pony named Posey (same color scheme and design and her CM was flowers with the same color than Fluttershy's butterflies).

Other changes: G1 Firefly, Fusts' fav pony, was turned into Rainbow Dash; G1 Surprise, a pegasus, was turned into Pinkie Pie; G1 Twilight, also keen in teleportation, was turned into Twilight Sparkle; G1 Glory, with the same curls and even the diamonds, I think, became Rarity. Only G1 Applejack returned as well as Spike, both with the same color schemes as their G1 counterparts (difference was G1 AJ was just an apple farmer, while our AJ is a farmer/cowgirl).
