Very good work. You mentioned that this is acrylic and oil. I wondered if you could explain the how and why on this technique. Again great job!

Hi Kevin! Thanks so much!!!
Yes, this is in fact a mixed media of acrylic and oils over canvas. I don't like to work only with oils... they smell funny and I get dizzy, so I combine acrylic paints first and then add the finishing touches with oil. You cannot start with oil and then add acrylic because, since acrylic is water based, it will crack over the oil.
This is my procedure:
1. Sketch in the figure with light charcoal.
2. Block in basic colours and shape with acrylic diluted in water. It has the look of watercolor at this point.
3. If I'm happy with step 2, I make each color stronger defining the shapes.
4. Add shadows. I usually squint my eyes to see the reference so that I can trick my brain into simplifying light and shadow.
5. Add medium lights. The final lights I add in the end.
6. Define shapes again with smaller brush.
7. Keep on refining the details; in this case the eyes and fur on the raccoon.
8. Define and refine the tree bark. Here I decided to use thick acrylic to add some texture to it.
9. Now, add the oil first to the background. I use a medium called liquine that helps me work with a finer layer of oil, almost like a glaze. This works sort of like a transparent film of paint to add intensity to the colors. Acrylics are wonderful but they don't have the same brilliancy than oils.
10. Now add more oil with liquine to the shadows. In this case I used burnt umber, payne's gray and a little bit of oriental violent.
11. Add lights to the eyes and some white fur.
12. Finally, after everything is COMPLETELY dry, I add one last layer of pure liquine and then clean it lightly with kitchen paper. This helps me unify the shine on the painting.
And this is pretty much it!
If you have any more questions I'd be happy to explain more.

Well, thank you so much for the very specific response, it is very kind of you to take the time. I have the same dislike and reaction to the odor from oil paint as you mentioned. I consider myself an acrylic artist, and use liquitex and amsterdam products mostly. I think that with the proper use of fluid and gel mediums combined wirh color one can control the the working and optical properties of the paint and achieve a very high level of brilliance. Not to mention proper surface prep and the correct varnish. I just find it curious that some artist combine the two mediums, because it seems as if it would be a "one or the other" type of decision. Your explaination has helped me get a better understanding of this, thanks again!

It seems to be a common issue to hate that smell. My dog goes all crazy when he senses I'm working with oils.
Liquitex... mmmm I don't like that brand. I'm a Pebeo girl.
I like acrylics because they dry really fast and, given that I'm hyperactive, it suits my need. But working with gradients on huge canvas with acrylic can be a headache. My teacher told me that I should attempt to combine them both and that I'd like it... it is true. I do like the results! My paintings look very bright and my gradients and detailing is wonderful. I have never tried the medium that slows the dryness in the acrylic... I have to buy it someday.
No, it's not and this or the other choice. It's an acrylic first, oil then choice. For small details and stuff like that it works beautifully.

I will have to give this a try. I have never heard of Pebeo, and have have painted with acrylics for over thirty years, it looks like they are only available here (US) as glass and porcelain paint, and liquid craft paint. The slow dry mediums work ok, I don't use that too much, but I really like the medium and heavy gels mixed with the colors, combined with a spray bottle of water. It makes gradients much easier than it would be with paint colors alone.
