Thank you. It was a fun one to hear what his students thought each day as he worked on it during class. O so many things can be read into this one for sure. -Heather

You're welcome and that sounds nice (I wish I could be in his class as to see a fellow artist in action; probably wouldn't say anything until it's done since I wouldn't want to be a distraction) Ā

He's an artist that does fine with distraction & being watched. He pretty fluidly goes from focused working to helping others & walking the room to see what students need. He's an attentive instructor even while doing his own work. He often has some sort of piece going during his classes so he can take students over to it to show examples of what he's talking about. So they end up sort of a collaboration/example piece some times. He rarely gets a student who is really interested in Art since he's at a community college in a farm community. They have to take the classes for the degrees. So keeping them motivated & valuing the class/his time, knowledge & effort is always a struggle for him. The disengaged and bitchy students are the thing that sucks the life out of his artistic motivation more than anything. He has a really big asshole in his class this quarter that simply refuses to do anything except take other people's photos that he's taken from the internet & draw them in a grid system on paper. Scott can't get the kid to understand that he's plagiarizing/copyright infringement other people's art by copying photos that are not his. Plus he flat out refused to do what is being taught in the class. He's a WAY more flexible college teacher than I was. He's working with the guy but needs to just stop giving a shit about him because the guy is an asshole that thinks he's paying teachers to teach him what ever he wants to learn, not that they are teaching him the things the class is certifying that he has learned. He should fail every student that does not respect copyright infringement laws just like you fail students that plagiarize.-Heather

Very interesting and well said about respecting copyright; the lack of creativity and how similar they are to the original is the reason I don't like renders and some fan art. It's also why I don't submit most of my fan art since they are mostly for practice. I hope that student learns the basics by copying and don't plan to sell any of these copied work in the future; if he does, you should share that person's name so other artists can watch out from him and call him out on plagiarism when he does, but that's just my crazy thought/opinion.

He likely won't ever sell anything. But he also should not get a passing grade for a class that is certifying that he has achieved a certain level of mastery of the subject of Art & art creation if all he does is copy rather than create compositions. Grid system is fine. Scott used it for years. But the reference materials have to come from the artist too. Many people think if it's on the internet it's "open source" or is "public domain". They don't understand the definitions of those words at all. Scott calls out other artists for trying to sell copied works. -Heather

Thank you. The Twisted garden series is Scott's more silly fun twisted side. We collaborate on the characters and his college students have made some awesome suggestions too. -Heather
