WHOA I actually drew one of my custom Pikmin types in the canon style for once- Or well close to the canon style that is-- so yeah this was meant to be an experiment of sorts.. Just to clarify maybe what my pikmin truly and fully do look like in the original style of the games- that way people can identify their features more.. as I will admit, when I draw Pikmin my style can tend to muddy up certain details with them.. Anyways I'll be copying PiK's notes from the orange pikmin over to here.PiK's Logs
Data Entry: Orange Pikmin
"Out of all Pikmin I found a bit strange and bizarre would have to be these fellows. Not just cause of looks alone, but more or less on how they act. It all started when me and Lynn went back and revisited a few old areas her Uncle was in. The area is quite small I will admit and I swear things look differently mapped out from what he had marked down in the place he deemed as "The Impact Site."
It's almost like the area geographically changed and I couldn't quite put my finger on it.. Bits and pieces of his map were spread out all over the border. Though with these areas being what seemed to be untouched we decided to explore it. The area was very peaceful to say the truth.. Only a few sleeping bulborbs we were thankfully able to sneak past and a few of those.. DISGUSTING shear bug- things.. ugh.. just thinking about them gives me the shivers..
Venturing forward into a small uncharted zone we had actually discovered something truly remarkable! Out of the corner of my eye I saw something run through the brushes.. Whatever it was it was quick and my first instinct was to follow it.. Now of course that probably isn't the wisest of moves, but I say I was determined!
Whatever it was I chased it and got it cornered to lead itself down into a cave system.. Halting at the entrance and peaking in I seen the panicked little creature quickly pick up a bomb rock and hiss loudly and hold it over it's head.. Just to watch it slowly let it's guard down and become more calm. It took a lot of coaxing to get it to slowly put down it's weaponry..
With that I make the discovery of the Orange Pikmin. They're always standing on their toes I notice and have distinct burnt marks all around.. A burnt to crisp black leaf with black little whiskers.. They seem to have more of a panicked and shy nature. Most Pikmin just come right up to us and are extremely friendly.. These type of Pikmin seem to be shy and flee when even getting close. One thing led to another and we found more of these Pikmin sneaking around and joining our ranks once seeing more of their kind.
Very oddly the Pink and White Pikmin in our party (As we have yet to discover any other types) seem to be very confused by them in nature. I've been watching them converse in some sort of way.. It's on days like this I really REALLY wish I knew what they were speaking about.. That is if Pikmin can converse in conversation at all.. I think all that gibberish may actually mean something.. Now that's for something for me to find out"
Update: The Orange Pikmin is SUPER weak attack wise.. it can't even harm one of those.. freaking.. female version of those blasted creepy crawlies that can't even attack- I HATE when those things crawl all over me.. Getting a bit off topic it was even being defeated by that.. I feel almost as these guys are good at is carrying.. In all honesty? That's okay, not everyone is a winner and now I see why they were so frantic when meeting us.. They're also Herbivores.. Maybe it's best that way..
Update 2: Those Bomb rocks WEREN'T for show! At one point our path was completely impassable thanks to some bulborbs sleeping right in front of the entrance way (like seriously out of all places you choose to sleep you BLOCK a path!? What a jerk..) I noticed an Orange Pikmin wander from our group without orders and pick up a bomb rock.. With fascination I guess it understood the situation and somehow very skillfully blew that grub-dog out of our way. Unlike other Pikmin in our group-- it instantly killed the thing.. I believe I have made a important discovery.. If only I knew where they came from as I can't seem to find anything on Olimar's notes at all?

Orange Pikmin are meant to be a "beta" version of the Yellow Pikmin before they were able to hold and carry bomb rocks and before their immunity to electricity.. They have bomb rock efficiency and can survive SMALL EXPLOSIONS- nothing huge.. They also seem to be a bit faster than the usual Pikmin types (not as fast as white) and are very fidgety.

How much of an explosion can these guys take? Can they survive gatling groinks, volatile dweevils, careening dirigibugs, etc.?

Yep sure can! And I also will say they can survive new explosive hazards as well that are smaller but can still kill pikmin in one shot compared to these hardened Orange veterans who were born for this

If their stem is burnt, how do they do photosintesis? And if they don't, how are they healthy? If they are healthy naturally.

Good question! and one that I'm glad was asked!
They're actually NOT healthy at all- There's a reason why this design was scrapped by the Pikmin long ago. (You can see my details on Pikmin wounds and regeneration for more details on this what I'm about to explain) due their leaves and stalk being burnt they absolutely cannot regenerate what so ever. (PiK shows the same amount of damage and traits as his leaf is destroyed) Pikmin have to have their leaf and or flower or bud to regenerate the wounds like they do. Such as getting their bones snapped and crushed into a fine powder by a bulborb and then walking out of it unscathed or being thrown into the wall and being burned alive all at the same time. Pikmin have a certain damage threshold before they perish and if that threshold does not succeed- they fully regenerate on the spot.. Now why this is important is that Orange Pikmin (along with PiK) cannot regenerate their health what so ever. So wounds to them can be more fatal and to heal they must rest and get actual medical help. (The Captains can actually provide this treatment at the end of the day) So these Pikmin can actually be often seen shaking and shuddering- and also have a huge assortment for food. Since their systems are destroyed- they have to rely on actual food such as meat and or fruit to keep their bodies sustained.. This has some drawbacks, but also gives them some bonuses that other Pikmin do not have
