Description
So this is my first attempt at using the Gradient Mesh tool in Illustrator. Man its such a fiddly tool!! It reminds me of the old days when i was learning Maya back at Tafe. or when i had to sort through thousands of Wonka Bars looking for the Golden ticket that one time. *eeerrrggghhh*Drawing with a pencil always seems like heaven after going through digital hell like this. (it wasnt all that bad, just gotta satisfy my chronic compulsion to complain)
After pulling out most of my hair, i finally had something that is kinda alright.....ish. I realised after starting that doing faces with the Mesh Tool was like throwing myself into the deep end of the pool, and i fucking HATE deep water.
Im pretty happy with the face, but the hair needs some work. I doubt ill ever come back to this though.

Actualy the hair isn't that bad. I notice that if you cover the eye it looks near real enough, though the lips could lose a bit of the plasticyness. But hey, that nose is damn fine, and I've only had one look at illustrator and freaked out, so this is pretty impressive to me.

+*! Saw this in domnx's article; this one's definitely my favourite. It's brilliant! I'm pretty new to Illustrator, and haven't looked at the gradient mesh yet... but that's my next task to play with an conquer :scared: You got any tips? x

Thanx for the fav+
The gradient mesh is heaps frustrating at first, but it pays off when you can use it well. tips you ask??
*hmmm*
-Go check out a couple tutorials on using the mesh tool for the basics.
-Go find some awesome mesh users online and go to their sites. often they will display the outlines they used as well, so you can get a pretty good idea how they do things. (some of these people are inhuman and impossibly talented)
-DONT start anything too complex. (like i always do. *errggghh*) Something with simple shapes, just to get a feel of it all.
-and last of all but most important, dont give up. its frustrating at first, but soon youll be a digital queen!!
Thanx for asking for my advice. always appreciated.

Thank you!
I've given it a go following your advice - I found a few helpful tutorials; I guess it's a patience thing from here on in! It's freakish how some of the meshes look... some are practically black with mesh lines!
Thanks again and keep up the good work

wow that's freaking incredible. it kinda poops all over my really lame and ass-backwards attempts to use the mesh tool. Me and Illustrator, we have a hate/hate relationship.

Man, Illustrator is DEFINATELY not my idea of magic and fun. More like pain and then some. But after hours of frustration, the satisfaction of a finished piece is almost worth it.

I think you did a really great job with this. I like how you've use the gradient mesh tool--the facial effects are nice! And I like the hair, too.
