I think it was important to Keith's character development. Laura's death gave him a the ability to open up to Natani and made him fully understand just how impactful this war is. It gave him the drive to fight to defend his new friends and live up to the title of general Nick gave him. Without Laura's death I don't think Keith would fully embrace his new role as a general.
