Description
Twokinds Tutorials - Digitigrade LegsLooking around Deviantart, I noticed that there weren't very many good, detailed guides on drawing characters with digitigrade legs, like those featured on my Keidran and Basitin races. Digitigrade, for those unaware, is a term for an animal that walks on their digits (toes) rather that flat-footed, as we humans do. This style of character design can be difficult for someone unused to this type of anatomical structure. Now, I am not claiming to be any sort of expert. But I have been drawing these guys for more than ten years now, and I often get asked how I draw certain things. So this is not necessarily a "how to draw" tutorial" as it is a "how I draw" tutorial, if you get my meaning.
I hope this information can prove useful for those of you who are aspiring artists, or at least interesting to those who wish to learn more about how I go about my drawing process. So without further adieu, please allow Flora to demonstrate for you how it works! Enjoy!

Thanks, Tom. Your guide is a great help. I'm thinking my own feline/anthro characters will look good using digitigrade legs. Can't wait to rework their paws.

From the sitting position, it looks she could have plantigrade movement with some difficulty.

This helped me A LOT to learn to draw anthro furries!
Thank you for taking time into making something like this, I really appreciate it! Β
One thing that makes me cringe a lot is how many furries are drawing lets incorrectly... legs need to bend a little, which they often forget >.>Β

I planned on to draw an OC with digitrade legs, but I never knew how to draw them (I don't even know how to draw human legs ._. but I'm still learning.) I'm glad that I know now! :3
Thanks for this tutorial!

Humans can walk digitigrade if we choose, but instinctually we walk plantigrade. It feels odd at first but it is possible to become used to it, and running digitigrade is fairly easy. In comparison:
Plantigrade pros:
-weight bearing capacity
-stability
Digitigrade pros:
-lowered impact on joints
-overall agility

i've stood digigrade since i was a little kid, you can run really fast, jump really high, and 16 years of doing that gives you legs of steel.
when i was 10 i liked to leap up 4 stairs at a time (and the stairs at our house were really big)
also, in taijitsu, my ukemi was always praised from the very beginning. keeping your knees bent restores your lost stability, and i can lift twice as much as my brother (albiet my little brother)Β

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one to do this. I am rather fast at running and can jump far because of this I suppose?

I have a question: How can you walk slowly?
If i try wo walk slow it feels like the stand-stile of an basitin (arch in an 180 degree position (Β .|Β instead ofΒ ./Β ))
I can only walk fast or run like this.

craziefuzi In reply to Furminium [2015-03-04 03:46:47 +0000 UTC]
Also, as I just figured this out, I tend to take long strides and stand in a low digitigrade position (heels hovering just above the ground) because it's easier to shift your weight and makr the small adjustments needed to walk normally (shifting your weight can't be done on locked out bones .|)

craziefuzi In reply to Furminium [2015-03-03 19:53:48 +0000 UTC]
well you just do? i can't really explain it to you because i don't really have anything to compare it with, but seeing how you can only walk or run fast, it appears you are using your feet like spring boards and you are not strong enough to hold yourself there. i can only guess this because during my therapy for my broken ankle, i experienced something similar where i was not strong enough to walk normally
when you are standing like this .| and not this ./ you are using your bones to hold yourself up, try bending your knees and other joints, and be aware when you unconsciously lock them out to make it easier on yourself.Β

Furminium In reply to craziefuzi [2015-03-04 17:13:18 +0000 UTC]
Ok.
I figured out. the problem isnt the standing art (.| ./) the problem is i was wearing a school bag, wich is very heavy and i found out:
If i walk with extra weigt till 5-10kg* i can walk like ./
If i walk with extra weight over 10kg* or over5kg** i can only walke like .| or ._ .
*= weigh near center of gravity.
**=weigh to faar from center of gravity(~20cm) in back direction.
Do you think i can train to walk even with a schoolbag?
Or is a purse (i mean the bag wich you wear sideways) a better idea?

Ive never had trouble with a back pack before, but if you think a satchel would solve your problem then go ahead!

Furminium In reply to craziefuzi [2015-03-05 15:09:45 +0000 UTC]
I guess im gonna use a satchel or something like this,
but you said you have no problems with a backpack so how heavy is yours?
π: 0 β©: 1
craziefuzi In reply to Furminium [2015-03-05 16:05:15 +0000 UTC]
heh well some of my friends can't even pick it up, so pretty heavy i'd say.
but don't compare yourself to me, i'm a black belt, and i work on my physical strength every day, so naturally i'd be strong
whatever works for you is good
(one time i came into a class crying because my back pack was too heavy for my ankle which had just gotten out of a brace, so don't push yourself, k?)

Furminium In reply to craziefuzi [2015-03-05 22:03:47 +0000 UTC]
I like to compare myself with things/people wich are mouch stronger, faster, accurate or something like this.
But i also know my physical limits (at least mostly), and try to live balanced
Bdw,my english isnt that good, but i guess a brace was the one to reposition an damaged bone/ankle/...
what happened? (If this is too personal, you dont need to answer, i know i ask sometimes too mouch.)
And you said you got a black belt, isnt it one of the higest belts you can even have?
And i wonder if the stile how you stand helps you to fight.
π: 0 β©: 1
craziefuzi In reply to Furminium [2015-03-05 22:12:44 +0000 UTC]
actually a black belt means you are ready to begin your real training and go past the basics, it takes around 4 years to get one in my martial art. yes, the standing style does help. you were correct about the brace thing.Β
i actually destroyed my ankle in a fall into a sinkhole i had no idea was under me, more than 16 fractures in my foot as as whole, a broken leg, and a broken ankle, my ankle is now mostly metal. and i'm glad you try to live balanced. if you hadn't told me, i would never have noticed that your English is not good (i know french and japanese if you prefer one of those )

Furminium In reply to craziefuzi [2015-03-05 22:52:10 +0000 UTC]
A Sinkhole(!) wow im glad you survived, i heared from some but...
can you even feel safe, standing on ground wich can break like youre standing on a frozen lake,
unknowing how deep you may fall? I couldnt sleep on such ground,
i guess i would check the ground till im definitly sure that this ground may hold tonns!
Bdw how deep was it(and on what sort of ground did you land)?
And i am german,but i prefer english,
I guess the more languages you can speak the better is it (But i guess some languages are hard to learn).
Good night(or morning).

craziefuzi In reply to Furminium [2015-03-05 23:09:39 +0000 UTC]
it wasn't that deep, it was a foot drop, i probably would have been fine if i knew it was there, they said it was caused by an old septic tank left in the ground, it rotted and left an air bubble in the earth.Β
there a lot of dangerous things that could kill you any second of any day, but as long as i forget i can sleep well.
and the poly lingual thing isn't for everyone, the more i focus on English, the less i know of Japanese; French, however, seems to be permanent in my mind.

Furminium In reply to craziefuzi [2015-03-06 18:16:25 +0000 UTC]
Hm... imagine you can choose a first and a second language, wich would it be, and why?
If i had the choice i would go for English as first, and something special as second.
about the dangerous things...well i guess i would search for the biggest danger (the damage x the probability that it happens)
and try to find a way to protect me/others, if I fail I write it down and go for the next danger.
Did you know: around 100 people die every year by pens.
π: 0 β©: 1
craziefuzi In reply to Furminium [2015-03-06 19:00:32 +0000 UTC]
i would choose japanese as a first (of course) and English as a secondΒ
what i was trying to say about danger was, don't worry about it. if it happens then it happens

If it happens then it happens is right, but i really like to have
"An answer for every question" i am mostly well prepared for...
all wich comes up to my mind (But i love suprises, especially the good ones).
And one of the reasons why i have answers is because I collect/combine them
I like to collect Wisdom,Knowledge,Facts,opinions,informations,...
Its like some sort of hobby, but its helpful for me and anyone around me.
I also enjoy enjoyable things.
