Description
Twokinds Tutorials - Digitigrade LegsLooking around Deviantart, I noticed that there weren't very many good, detailed guides on drawing characters with digitigrade legs, like those featured on my Keidran and Basitin races. Digitigrade, for those unaware, is a term for an animal that walks on their digits (toes) rather that flat-footed, as we humans do. This style of character design can be difficult for someone unused to this type of anatomical structure. Now, I am not claiming to be any sort of expert. But I have been drawing these guys for more than ten years now, and I often get asked how I draw certain things. So this is not necessarily a "how to draw" tutorial" as it is a "how I draw" tutorial, if you get my meaning.
I hope this information can prove useful for those of you who are aspiring artists, or at least interesting to those who wish to learn more about how I go about my drawing process. So without further adieu, please allow Flora to demonstrate for you how it works! Enjoy!

Thank you for the great help :3 I can draw human legs and animal legs but I could never combine them just right >.< If only I have seen this before I worked on my anthro pixel icon. The tutorial I found only covered the basics for a hoofed character <.< it was a good tutorial though....but not quite the same as paws.

Another way to get use to it is to learn proper fighting stance. Career fighters, much like animals, stand and move on the balls of their feet and toes. Their heel never touches the ground unless they have to catch themselves. I've done it so much it's just how I stand when barefoot. It's just second nature. Of course the proportions would be different but if learn proper footwork then you can have a great reference on how keidran and basitin would move in any situation just by doing so yourself. Plus its always good to know good form in case push comes to shove. Life happens.

thanks for this, it both helps with my drawing and, believe it or not, my project to actually Make Digitigrade stilts for a cosplay, breaking it down like this reminds me that yes, some designs are a lot easier but in the long run, if I'm gonna make anything that looks good, I'm gonna have to stick to basic anatomy :3.
also, love your character ^-^

Cool and helpful tutorial. One question. When a Keidran kicks, would they use their heel/arch or their ball? (Both are used in real life martial arts)

This is a very beautiful tutorial! What I especially like is the feet/toes section and how you managed to draw the movement each of the toes separately. It's very helpful, not just for characters like this but also for 'human' characters, because of all the poses and the movement-lines of the body. Thank you for making this ^w^

I've seen some other tutorials as how to make the digitigrade legs before, but not as full as this... Like "Here: this is a digitigrade leg, got it? this is plantigrade. Hope you learnt". Thank you very much on this!

The problem I always have drawing digitigrade legs isn't even so much to do with the leg, it's the foot. Specifically, drawing a four-toed reptile-type foot from behind.

Like he shows here, I find that drawing a triangle in the pose/skeleton sketch can really help get the shape and position right. Except longer than his, since you won't be drawing them tip-toed. ^^ hope this helps!
